House of the Dying Sun offers a glimpse of an alternate future of what space sims would look like if the genre didn't precipitously fall off the face of the Earth following Freespace's demise. Sure, the genre is resurging thanks to crowd funding and the novelty of VR. But the genre finds itself carrying the inertia of Chris Roberts and David Braben's gradiose visions. That's not to say their visions of widescope of space combat and exploration are any less valuable contributions to the parched space sim landscape. But sometimes you just want to get in, shoot stuff, and get out. And more importantly, play around with mechanics that are tighter focussed for that quick pace. While also being titillated aurally and visually.

That's where House of the Dying Sun comes in. House of the Dying Sun is such a tightly focussed space sim with mechanics and gameplay that have taken the Freespace and X-Wing mold but have applied such a wonderful spin on the concepts taken for granted. The game feels familiar but so different than anything I've ever played. The shooting feels great. Maneuvering is straightforward but still reflects a certain mount of tension and stress via the speed conveyed and the drift mechanics that can be used. And the sounds are meticulously detailed such that it greatly enhances the immersion. And dat hyperpsace effect.

I have trouble believing that a game as polished as this was primarily developed by one man. Buy this game, just for that awesome warp effect alone. I don't have a VR headset but playing this game is really making me considering getting one.
