Early Access Review
As of today, Boss Key Productions is effectively no more.

Four years ago I set out to make a world class video game studio and I hired some of the best talent in the videogame industry. They worked tirelessly to produce quality products and, while we had our ups and downs, I'd like to think we had fun doing it. LawBreakers was a great game that unfortunately failed to gain traction, and, in a last ditch attempt we scrambled to do our take on the huge battle royale genre with Radical Heights which was well received, however, it was too little too late.

To those who have supported myself and the studio these last four years, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart and everyone who came to work for me.

Please note that servers for Radical Heights will remain up for the near future.

Thanks again,

Cliff

This is a cautious recommendation from someone who grew up with Myst. A lot of this will be similar to a review for realMyst's original release.

This is just as awkward to control as realMyst was, and having to move the mouse to slide a Marker Switch up and down or move the flow controls in Channelwood from side to side is not an easy experience if you are using free movement.

This game uses the same movie files from realMyst (the brothers' library videos are the same as the original release, other videos are newer and less-well-acted). Myst: Masterpiece Edition runs like garbage on modern systems--if it runs at all--but at least when you play that you believe that Atrus believes what he's saying and isn't just reciting old dialogue.

Having the original gameplay images for Myst pop up when you press Shift (while not using free movement) is a nice touch, though if you are running this on a modern resolution you'll barely be able to see the images in the center of your screen.

The sound is as great as it ever was, although just like with realMyst, this version of the game does not completely mute the music at appropriate times (as in the fore-chamber).The music itself is not changed from classic Myst and that's a huge point in this release's favor.

I guess there's a flashlight now but having just finished the game I never used it. Not sure what the point of it is unless you're too lazy to turn the crank on the battery in Stoneship. I can't think of any other locations that are very dark and also have something worth seeing. I don't even know what button it is bound to. Probably F.

At the end of the day, this is still Myst, and one of the first games to tell a deep story purely by observations of one's environment (Gone Home also does this very well). Modern systems don't have many other ways to play other releases of Myst without jumping through compatibility hoops so having this on Steam is cool---BUT the original release is on iOS in untouched, fully compatible glory.

If you own realMyst, this game is 12 bucks instead of 18. Maybe that will help sway you.
