The big problem with chess is that there are all those pieces, each with their own move-set, attacking at least 4 different directions, able to move any number of spaces along those directions, all smashed into the center of the board. The human mind (without extensive training) can't comprehend it all. Chess games are filled with lamentations of "OHHHH you can hit that piece?!" "OHH I didn't see that!" "OHH I forgot you could attack there!" That is bad game design. If it was made today, publishers would turn it down.
