Of all the souls games DS2 definitely stands out and for me, all the right reasons. I feel that this game is heavily misunderstood. Admittedly the PvE is somewhat weak compared to the other Souls entries and the majority of areas don't hold the same attachment and consistency as DS1. The majority of the negative reviews of this game are likely taken from a PvE standpoint, this is fair as you are paying for the 'Souls' experience however part of the souls experience is the PvP and I haven't found a single souls entry that has more varied, in depth and overall fun PvP. A few more nuanced features in DS2 that don't appear in any other souls games are a welcome feature to me but not for everyone. Agility, seems to throw people off a lot in their opinion of the game, this often leads to people saying broken hitboxes etc...
Features that are good additions:

-Bonfire Aesthetics
-Variation in NG+
-Powerstancing
-Multitude of scripted events
-invasions even when hollowed
-all infusions come into use
-Very varied weapons
-Respec

Most of the things I've mentioned may be missed by the bulk of the PvE playerbase, gone through the game once to get a feel, no need to bonfire aesthetic, never powerstanced because didn't know, sticks to one weapon. These are just some of the reasons I think people have missed the new things the game has to offer.

Now the negatives:
-Linear level design
-crowded and overwhelming enemy presence
-Clung to metas and setups that are seen time and time again
-many humanoid like bosses
-Most conflicts overcome with stunlocking and circling
-hard to digest story

So overall I'd definitely recommend this game, the influx of negativity that this game has received is unfair to those who haven't experienced it. For me the PvP is the main selling point but to those looking for more PvE souls this is a passable edition to the series.
