Early Access Review
Game is NOT abandonware apparently. Developers are trying to make this work. Very rocky initial early access release, but the game has a lot of potential.

Early Access Review
Perhaps one of the biggest piles of ♥♥♥♥ I've ever had the misfortune to fool myself into trying. Nothing works in this game. The textures don't load in, you can't interact with anything, you rubber band all the time, the performance is piss poor (~20fps on a 3080 ti), the UI is not intuitive.

DO NOT BUY IN IT'S CURRENT STATE (OR MAYBE EVER CONSIDERING THE DEVELOPERS THOUGHT IT WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO RELEASE).

I just want to shove my staff into one of these forest spirits and bukkake them with my nature jizzle but the game won't let me. No guano.

A soulless abomination of a game.

Imagine a game with actual care and love put into it.

Imagine a game that is actually inspired and tries to push the genre into different territory.

New World is none of the above.

It's a generic amalgamation of every game that has come before it but without any of the lesson learned of those games. A soulless, tiresome gear grinding treadmill with the most mundane and pointless quest model and gear acquisition system you can possible inflict on a player base.

Character customization is limited; character progression is as equally limited. Each weapon only grants you access to a potential of 6 abilities to unlock, but only three of which you can use at the same time (per weapon, equalling 6 total abilities, but only 3 that you have access to at a time per weapon swap). The illusion is that there is a lot of variety in weapon combinations and choices, but the reality is that the amount of actual viable competitive weapon choices and combos are quite small, especially as far as wars are concerned.

The bulk of the game is PvE (player vs. environment) and is perhaps is the most mundane thing you'll ever encounter in a game and consists of doing side quests and town board quests in between your main story quest, all of which lack the character, charm and interest of other similar games. The overall story for those who are interested in that type of stuff is a cognitive mess and completely nonsensical. A complete after thought thrown in at the last minute with little care.

Pvp in this game is a side activity. Make no mistake, New World is NOT a pvp game, no matter how many times people try to convince you (and themselves). How could it be? It's optional, and the developers have gone out of their way to try and shelter players from it. Factions only exist to further muzzle open world pvp, and outside of that are completely pointless. Out of all the games with faction based pvp I've played (DAOC, Planetside 2, Warhammer, ESO), New World takes the reward for the worst implemented faction pvp system I've ever encountered.

Combat in New World has devolved quite a bit from the original version. Where once timing, resource, spacing, footsies and being able to read your opponent were important factors of the game, much of that has been diminished and in some situations outright removed. Most medium to large scale fights devolve into two blobs running into one another, guild wars 2 style, spamming your aoe / cc abilities and clenching your butt checks in the hopes you come out the other side in tact. It's a near mindless endeavour, and the dumbness of it further reflects the current state of the game.

The combat is also completely wasted on the pve portion of the game. The monster AI is stupid, predictable and easily beatable. Perhaps this is another reason why combat (and the game in general) has been continuously dumbed-down. You don't need smart, intuitive , nuanced combat if the majority of your pve combat encounters are going to be dumb button spamming.

With that said, combat in smaller scale scenarios still has it's merits, but that too can devolve into idiocy quickly as well. Part of this due to the fact of there being little to no punishment for dying in pvp encounters, thus people are more willing to play carelessly. The game simply does not enforce or promote intelligent play in many pvp scenarios.

Wars are still a buggy mess and have been for at least a year and half (if not more). An instanced 50v50 battleground akin to just about something you'd find in any other similar game you've ever played; except they actually work without having worry about whether or not you're going to make it through the ( some times) minutes long loading screens. This game has been delayed multiple times to fix these issues and yet they still exist. Some of these bugs have existed for YEARS. What the ♥♥♥♥ is going on here?

The wars themselves can be pretty fun if the competition level is near equal. If not, one side is going to get squashed and shut out completely, resulting in the losing side being camped out side their doors (if their attacking), or getting bull dozed over and their fort getting ransacked in a matter of minutes if they're defending.

The system in place to pick who gets to declare war is purely idiotic. It's basically a lottery, with an added incentive if your group contributes more. The reality is that wars are HIGHLY exclusive. The majority of players will not get to enjoy this experience because they will not be picked for wars. Guilds large enough to control a settlement will have a large roster to pick from, and if needed will reach out to other equally skilled guilds to act as ringer. Your average player is ♥♥♥♥ out of luck.

The end game is an absolute joke and involves you running the same played out and boring content over again to acquire the next snippet of gear score gain so you can continue the process over and over again. Think something similar to Destiny's Light score, but possibly even dumber. If you like fighting the same mobs you fought at level 20, you're going to have a hell of a good time with the slight prop variations, re-scales and palette swaps.

Outpost rush, the level 60 battleground is a giant turd. Recycled mechanics you'd find from other games; that's assuming you even get a match to pop. It's based on local server participation, unlike you find in other games where the battleground queue might be cross server. This means unless you have 40 60s (outpost rush is 20v20) online at the same time and willing to play, you might find yourself waiting for HOURS. According to steam achievements less than 1% have actually reached level 60, so good luck.

In conclusion I strongly suggest you do not purchase this game. The developers abandoned their original version of a sandbox open world pvp game with meaning player interactions, and instead decided they were going to shoe horn a tedious and awful pve gear grinding game into the design. They failed. The game is a boring, repetitive, tedious, uninspired, buggy, pointless and most importantly soulless mess of a game. It's an below average PvE game with limited appeal and content, and a half assed game with pvp features that feel like they were designed by the marketing department.

Vote with your wallet and stay clear.

VOs are unbearable to listen to in english, and barely managable in japanese. The characters don't move their mouthes.
AI teammates are unfortunately terrible, got stuck on terrain and their attacks are clunky and clumsy.
Controller some times stops responding.

Game is priced a bit too high, but besides that I'm actually enjoying that. It's not a triple A experience, not even a double A, but it's a enjoyable. I wouldn't recommend buying at this time however, especially at this price.
