This game has so many things working that other games in the genre only promise.
What you get:
-space legs w/o forcing you to play a crappy shooter when you get out of the ship
-plenty of systems
-factions and economy that you can actually put your finger on, you can help them or destroy them
-lots of ships, ships that dock to ships, capital ships that actually feel like capital ships, carriers, freighters, scouts etc.
-very immersive combat..
-great music and sounds
-good AI, if not great
-each station layout looks unique and you can build stations yourself
-your stations can trade or produce and sell anything, from basic refined ore to ships, adding more layers to the economy
-very good campaign like story lines
-many community mods you can try out
All in all this game feels very complete, the dlc are totally worth the money with a lot of content.

What could be better:
-graphics look great most of the time, especially ships... but some animations feel a little off (like moving the character is very linear and unnatural) I hope they will improve on that
-3rd person view of the ships could be nicer and better controlled (this is something they are already working on from what I've read)
-you can use a HOTAS for flying but I feel the game is easier with mouse and keyboard and it feels great this way. If you want a HOTAS immersive experience, it doesn't feel that great (at least for me it doesn't)

What you don't get:
- Multiplayer. It's a single player game, but to be honest It feels more alive than any other space sim.

I liked it.

Game is old and old games are awesome.
I like the music a lot. Voice acting could be better but it's decent enough.
The idea of the rts with customized units impressed me at that time. Also base building is nice in this game.

Casual player here:
Game is fun, just as fun as playing AoE 2 casual.
Campaigns are nice with nice history lessons on top.
Runs very smooth.

One of the best remakes

The game looks nice and runs well but I have never played such bad AI in a race sim before. It has no regards for what you do on track. If you break and it wants to break later it will just run into you. If it wants to turn and you are in the way it will turn into you. The way you fall is well made but I just don't want to rewind 5-10 times at the start of the race. The only way to win a race without rewinding in every corner is to set the difficulty to very easy and just get in front to avoid any contact with the AI, which of course it's no fun.

EDIT: I just noticed that although I bought the "complete pack", i still have to pay for the all the new DLC that got released after.

EDIT2: this game just gave me another punch in the stomach. Endurance mode has rewind disabled. The most hard and long races don't have the option to correct a mistake. Now try to stay on track for 1 hour making no mistakes or no AI running into you. Also, if you thought that was hard devs put an extra cherry on top... let's say you have to do qualifying for the endurance race and you place 3rd... you start 3rd in the race and in the first corner AI knocks your bike and you restart WELL.. after you restart the race, you won't start from 3rd, quali doesn't matter anymore, you start from last.

If they ever fix this I will come back to this review and turn it around because apart from this the game is awesome.

This sim offers more than some "top" sims out there. It's complex enough, yet playable and fun. It's a combat sim, but you do get to flip switches and press buttons to manage your systems and weapons, etc. Everything you find in the cockpit works! You can tell it's made for VR, you can do everything with controllers and although I have a hotas joystick and throttle, it's easier to just use the vr controllers.
This is a sim that works! You sit on a chair and put your headset on and you're good. You don't have to program 100 combinations on your hotas. You don't need to look for your mouse or keyboard (unless you enjoy doing that... then you can still do it).

classic best

not everything works as it should... but spent the hours in it and always had fun. I can't say I do not recommend for someone who wants to train his immagination in a space like environment.
Many players out there and there are tons of servers. Also you can play alone or just with a couple of friends in your own world.
I hope they will fix everything soon as it has great potential.

graphics are actually decent in high resolution
