Only get it if on sale:
Really, it's TF2 with dinosaurs. Same engine and pretty much same mechanics. However, the only reason I'm giving it a recommend is because of the dinosaurs...otherwise pretty much overpriced.

6/10
Meh.

This game is fun and has plenty of activities to do. You can shoot stuff, or trade, or ferry goods across the exeedingly vast universe. I'd reccomend it, and it's pretty good for a beta early access game.

As for graphics:

-The overworld graphics are very nice

-Station graphics could use a little work, however

-There are a couple of bugs, and joystick support is so-so

-Mechanics are good

-Weapons are a bit unbalanced, some lower-teir ones are better than higher teir ones.

-Difficulty seems easy-ish, trading doesn't seem worth it.

This is an updated review of the game, since my last one over a year ago.

I have been playing SE since early, early access, and the game has significantly improved. Many of the classic glitchiness has been cleaned up, and the devs have even cooperated to assist in Linux performance and playability. Since a few years ago, my impressions have significantly improved!

Generally, the gameplay of SE is similar to that of other resource/block building games, eg Minecraft. Combat and inventory and resource management have a stronger focus. Most of your time will be spent either building or piloting ships (in survival), the process of design is usually dwarfed by the time it takes to build things.

While the developers are certainly dedicated to the game and continue to deliver content years into release, there are still a few problems I have with their process -- many times, instead of fixing a fundamental issue, a "band-aid" fix will be applied. For example, there are several block and complexity limits added to the game in an effort to reduce lag, rather than fix underlying engine problems that cause it (a good example is Factorio: the developers spend countless hours refining minor mechanics in efforts to allow players to build larger bases.) While these efforts may seem to be a decent stopgap measure, many of them have been in place for a LONG time. It would be nice to see them cleaned up.

The other major problem is a lack of "stuff to do." Once you have a few ships in a space base set up, there are little reasons to explore the other planets in survival - the game doesn't demand any exploration beyond the extremely tedious process of prospecting for a few essential ore deposits. It would be nice to see more late-game gameplay other than "build big ship!" be added: perhaps missions, or planet-exclusive resources.
