Years in the future, Helldivers 2 will be an institutionally required study course on "how a developer accidentally releases a fun videogame, then spends every single update post-launch actively making it objectively worse in every respect".

***Post-update(s), it's a lot more fun to play again. Still some absolutely pants on head maddeningly stupid design and balance decisions here and there, and absolutely GLACIAL pace of release for any meaningful content... but at its core it's at least fun again. Usually.

My entire 90min playtime I felt I'd rather just be playing 2. Returns cements in my mind how much of a more enjoyable experience 2 is, and how dated 1 is. Movement feels dated, level design feels dated, no scrappers, no printers, locking skills behind the new minigames unless I grind, can't even change the direction of attacks while actively attacking...

The tunes are mint, as is the entire visual experience. Can't see myself playing more of it, though. Sure do hope B*tchford and Co don't screw up the expacs for 2.

A truly painful campaign experience. Wanna play your own way, at your own pace, doin' your own thing? Too bad. Do the race, or lose. Being punished with more and more chaos portals the more land you own is textbook anti-fun.

This review will almost certainly change to a positive one once Mortal Empires releases. Right now, I have zero desire to play WH3 as a standalone title any further.

There's no dogs to pet in this game, but you can tame and pet the bugs. The tame bugs are very good bois, and you should take care of them. If you shoot my bug, I send a fourty millimetre nuclear warhead at your beard. Don't ♥♥♥♥ with my bug. He's doing his best, and he is very handsome.

A game I'd never thought would transition so well from 2D to 3D. I prefer the first game's visual aesthetic and music, but there's no denying the immense amount of freedom and dynamism that comes with that extra dimension. Constant updates from dedicated and open devs. A riot with mates.

Just make sure some cheeky loot goblin isn't ganking all your red items...

You know you've reached peak roguelike when:

>dodge roll into a room
>face to face with an enemy
>it's a sentient walking bullet
>it's carrying a gun
>the gun fires bullets
>you're holding a giant shotgun shell
>it shoots shotguns
>those shotguns each shoot shotgun shells
>hotel?
>trivago

It's the single greatest game of its genre. If you find any joy at all in playing its peers, you'll eagerly leap into the rabbit hole of this one.

The Aliens/Space Hulk game we all deserved. A tiny indie gem, yet leagues better than the garbage franchise games we get. Fairly consistent updates, with constant QOL tweaks and adjustments.

It's a hard slog. Bring some mates. Check your fire, though - they might not be your mates for very long.
