One of the best roguelikes I have ever played. If you like roguelikes, make sure you pick this one up. The progression feels great, the accuracy of the mythology is exquisite, and the art is magnificent. Do yourself a favor and buy this game. That's a ten.

Darkest Dungeon is a masterful work of art. Unfortunately I see a few negative reviews talking about how unfair this game can be in terms of RNG. Yes, the game can be extremely difficult, and punishing at times. Yes, there is some RNG involved, however in my opinion, this adds to the reality of the game. If you were exploring a dungeon and you enter a room that is full of spiders, you might get surprised or even scared, and that's one of the RNG elements of this game.

I am very saddened to see most of the negative reviews of this game, as most of them say they cannot recommend this game because of the RNG aspect and how punishing it is. Maybe it's because I'm an avid Dark Souls player so I'm used to being destroyed over and over, but this game is not unfair in my opinion. Yes there are some mechanics that are RNG but they can be influenced. For example, if your light level is higher the chance of getting surprised upon entering a new room goes down, when opening chests, you can use keys to increase your chance of success, when removing blockages you can use shovels to prevent negative effects, etc.

Darkest Dungeon has one of the best art styles I have ever seen. The art style as well as the exquisite narration are the things that made me fall in love with this game. I usually cannot stand turn based combat in my games, it feels slow and I just want to get it over with. However, in Darkest Dungeon I really feel like each turn brings something new and it feels awesome to think through what series of attacks I'm going to do, and readjusting my strategy when things don't go as intended.

There are several classes to Darkest Dungeon, and each one is very unique to this game. Of course the classes can be broken down into more generic classes such as tank, healer, dps, etc. But the classes in this game are unlike anything I have seen before, they take full advantage of the stress mechanic in ways I did not expect. Speaking of, the stress mechanic is another one of the things that makes this game incredibly unique. It may seem like a pain in the rear at first, but I for one came to love and appreciate it the more I played.

To sum up, don't let the difficulty of Darkest Dungeon dissuade you from playing the best gothic rogue-like RPG I have ever seen. Don't let the RNG mechanic turn you off of this game. I was skeptical at first, because of the turn-based combat, but buying this game has been the best decision (game-buying wise) I have made since I bought Dark Souls. And if you are feeling lost, or unsure of what to do, take a look at dolphinchemist on Twitch (I am in no way affiliated with him whatsoever) he helped me understand a lot of the things I was frustrated with when I started out, and he's a really nice guy.

This game is amazing. I highly recommend the soundtrack. Imagine Ori and the Blind forest meets Dark Souls. It's truely amazing.
