This isn't a review for Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. This is a review for the "Special Edition".
Monkey Island 2 is an awesome game of course. In my opinion the "Special Edition" is just completely unnecessary. I bought it anyway because I read that you could switch to the classic version. There's a few issues with that though. In the one hour I played I encountered the following issues that led me to have the game refunded:

- You can't switch to classic mode in the menu, you have to do it after starting the game.
- You have to disable the voice acting seperately.
- Everytime you walk from one location into another there's a button prompt (in the "Special Edition" design) which says something like "Press A to enable commentary"...
- Classic mode or not you've got the "Special Edition" menu.

I'd pay full price for the original version, but not for the "Special Edition", which is just annoying.

Yo ho, yo ho ...

It's one of the best games I've ever played. For reference: my all-time favourite games are Siege of Avalon, Gothic and Morrowind... and now Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Some personal Pros and Cons:

Pros
  • I've never experienced a world so convincing. Riding along a rural road, into a village, entering a barn. Every detail seems to be there, everything seems real.

  • I love the fighting system, as it requires player skill instead of button mashing.

  • As a combination of the two above, historical fighting techniques have been very nicely implemented. I can only really evaluate the long sword fencing, but so far this is the most realistic sword fighting I’ve ever seen in a game.

  • You don’t start off as some destined hero on a constant quest of epicness. You’re just a mortal running errands.

  • The quests are designed with the same love for detail as the world.

Cons
  • Yes, there are bugs and glitches. NPCs clipping into each other or behaving like the dumb NPCs they are. But it's not worse than any Bethesda game for example.

  • I personally strongly dislike the save system, but there's a Mod for that... and some people seem to love the regular system.
