I honestly couldn't really tell with the press and word-of-mouth about the game around or after release, but the game truly is an immersive sim.

If you're a fan of the genre, pick it up on a sale.

I had the most fun just exploring the town and breaking into apartments, stores, restricted areas.

Kind of feels like Thief in that regard.

The story and the main quests on the other hand did not hook me so I played until I got my fix of immersive sim and stopped.

The action feels good, but the camera had me keep asking "WHY?!" repeatedly.

Stopped playing because of how bad it controls and gets in the way of the gameplay.

I'd recommend this game but with some caveats, but we'll get to that.

First and foremost: survival game with dinosaurs, multiplayer, base-building and optionally PvP. Heck yes.
I don't like spoiling things too much, but dinosaurs and animals are a core part of the player's engagement in the game, not just the enemies of the world you have to deal with.

However, the game is sometimes extremely rough around the edges.

Having played this as a dino fan myself and with a dino freak friend, we could look past the issues of jankiness, but it did definitely test my patience at times.

If you're the type of player who can look past some flaws and stick with a game simply due to the theme or feel appealing to you more than usual, I'd recommend giving this a go.
If, on the other hand, polish, quality and user experience are paramount, maybe try this at a deep deep sale or simply do not even pick it up.

If you do decide to pick it up, ask around for a friend who knows their way around all the different map options and server parameters etc. because those can also very much change your experience, and make or break the game for you!

As an exemple, the first map I tried out made me want to get a refund, but with some research and setting up, I've had the time of my life in the Ragnarok map.

Dinos are cool.

In my opinion and experience the game arguably starts off strong with great visuals and atmosphere, but quickly turns into a boring walkathon through uninteresting locales with bullet-sponge enemies, with a lot of backtracking, and the occasional on-rails sequences that aren't particularly exciting.

Save for a very short spookier section that you probably already heard about, not much in the realm of horror to justify the lacking gameplay elements.

Also the level of polish is very bipolar, and there's a lot of false affordance to be experienced.

Quite surprised the reviews for this game are overwhelmingly positive.
I would not recommend it for the asking price.

Only way I could recommend this is if it was a <= 15$ DLC for Far Cry 5, and even then, it would be a mediocre experience at best.

More of the same but with less options for traversal across the map and completely baffling choice to add pseudo-RPG elements such as "item quality" that are completely arbitrary.

Enemies that are "yellow quality" cannot be beaten by "purple quality" items or lower (iirc, couldn't care less about the colors). But wait! You can buy better items with real money! Some of the funniest ♥♥♥♥ ever.

This also came out around the time Ubi significantly became worse than it was prior, and cancelled/delayed all of their projects for a year because of the backlash. Meaning: even Ubi fans were not able to process the garbage-tier stuff they were being fed anymore.
