I've put over 2000 hours and $1,500 into Apex. Respawn and EA have decided to charge real money ($9.99) for the battle pass and making it so you cannot use your Apex Coins. This prices out free to play players who are a necessary group of people in order to keep the game in a healthy state. Additionally, my 10% discount from EA for having Game Pass is no longer worthwhile. Beyond that, the season, which is split into 2 now also has the battle pass split which each BP costing 10 dollars. Meaning the battle pass has doubled in price. There plenty of stuff you can watch online for more in depth analysis if you're interested in how bad this change is.

Additionally right now cheating is running rampant. The combination of the new change, the cheaters, the server issues, and just everything else going on, I cannot recommend anyone play this. For those who do decide to play... DO. NOT. BUY. THE. BATTLE. PASS.

Im sure this game probably gets better later (or I hope so) but I feel asleep twice while playing the first few hours. It's incredibly linear and you don't really have any idea what's going on. Just run forward and spam (A).

Graphics are meh
Cut scenes are meh
Combat is boring as hell
Story is awful

Latest Review
I've given the game some more time and the majority of my originally review below still stands. However, for me personally, the game really shines in Ranked 1v1. It's somewhat slower paced and really teaching you more of the meta game than doing online or single-player fights.

So after playing in the Ranked 1v1, I feel the game is worth getting, however I still have some concerns with the overall game.

Arena
You get 3 lives and the first one to run out of lives loses, within the 4 minutes. I've never had the time go over. Anyway, the characters feel much more unique in Ranked 1v1 than in any other mode. I highly recommend spending some time in there. It can teach you a lot about combat and give you the time to practice moves, something that is a bit harder to do in the normal 4-player free for all.

Dodging
Dodging needs some work. I've been playing with it a lot as it should be a huge part of being sucessful in fights. However I haven't quite gotten the hang of dodging and I wish it was more apparent when it's sucessful and when it fails. Additionally with Dodge I wish there was a second ability, block. Dodging is great and should be well rewarded but I would love to be able to block and take only a percentage of the damage.

Level Design
The design are pretty simple but this is generally a good thing as you can concentrate on the combat. However, I'd love to see some more unique levels such as:

  • Cage fight with only the top open so that you have to knock them up or up and out
  • Levels with unique mechanics such as rising lava, ice levels where the floors are slippery, levels with extra gravity or half gravity
  • Maze like levels where you can bounce your oppenent around like a pinball
  • etc

Match Length
The current match length is 4 minutes, which is just about perfect. This allows you to queue for a game and be done within 5 minutes. Which means you can do this on breaks or just about anything. Additionally with having a responsibilites, the longest you'd need anyone to wait for you to finish your game is the 4 minutes, which is really nothing, unless your house is on fire.

In 4-player FFA, this seems really short and you'll often find the game feels like it ends quicker. In 1v1 this about the perfect time as it's a much slower pace.

First Review: (Thumbs down)
This is basically a Smash Brothers Clone with very little to make each character stand out.

There is Hammer, Blaster, Rocket Lance, Sword, Spear, Katar, and Axe weapons. Each 'Character' has a two of these that make them 'unique'. Everything else is basically the same with the exception of there power-up move (hold heavy button, release).

There are 14 characters, and 7 weapons. So every character's combination is unique but the sword on one character functions exactly the same on another.

Each character has some stats but I haven't noticed much a difference.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to see a brawler on PC. However here's where the cash shop comes in. First, skins are bought with Mammoth Coins which from what I can tell have to be purchased with real money. This isn't necessarily bad, cosmetic in today's microtransaction games usually means real money and the Developers need income to keep the game going.

Second, once beta is over all characters will need to be unlocked. From the store in game:

"You'll spend your Gold here to permanently unlock your favorite Legends. Earn Gold through Online Play, Weekly Missions, and the Daily Login Bonus.

All Legends are temporarily unlocked for testing while we double check Gold gain. Soon, Legends will be locked and available to play through a Free Character Rotation.

We will also be releasing an All Legends Pack (current and future) once the rotation begins! Alternatively, you can unlock them one at a time with Mammoth Coins."

So basically this taking the MOBA (LOL, SMITE, HOTS and not DOTA 2 since DOTA 2 gives you everything) route by having a free rotation on 14 characters.

Each character needs to function much more different if they are going to charge for them in my opinion.

There also needs to be way more items in game. Currently there are weapon pick ups which will be one of your two weapons. You also have bombs, spikey balls, mines, and this horn that summon a weapon at the location you used it and it hits people in a horizontal line as it flies across the screen.

There is a lot of promise here but very little diversity in the current iteration but it does very promising.

Having said all that, it's great to see Brawler on PC with local competative play, single player, online, and ranked fights. This game is very controller friendly and UI is very smooth and easy to navigate. Additionally while you wait for your online game to start you get thrown into a bot game immediately locally.

To wrap up...

Pros
  • Great UI
  • Very responsive
  • 4-player
  • Single Player, Online, Ranked modes
  • Controller Friendly
  • Easy to pick up
  • Lobby is a bot game instead of waiting for a game to launch, which is way cool

Cons
  • Cosmetic Items are Cash Only (from what I can tell)
  • Very little diversity between characters
  • Characters will be on a free rotation (Personal Opinion for me)
  • Not very many characters
  • Not enough items in game (bombs basically)
Hopefully before it leaves beta more characters and diversity will be added.

I will update this post as I play more of this game, once it leaves Beta.

Edit: Fixed typos, spelling, grammar, and other stuff

I had pre-ordered and played with the same 3 people from work. The problem was it got incredibly repetative. Not to say there wasn't a lot of missions, but most missions just weren't worth the time and effort to try and complete them. 5 day mission that could take hours to complete correctly or 60 seconds doing a single mission over and over for more xp/money per hour? I quit right after they nerfed all the "good" (read efficient) missions.

The problem was at the time all the efficent missions weren't very fun and the fun missions had way to high of a failure rate which turned an awesome scenario to near unbeatable odds rather quickly. Which meant the best thing to do if you tripped and alarm or otherwise messed up was to simply reset and try again... and again... and again.

Additionally it now looks like it's been flooded with DLC. I would recommend stearing clear of this as it looks like it's now a DLC money grab (14 DLCs)

It's not actually very fun. Everything seems to have to be crafted or something. Not enough variety in Survivors. Gameplay is different but otherwise quite boring (melee and ranged abilities). Maybe it's better when you level up but out the gate I didn't feel like playing more.

This is probably the best MOBA for your money. Unlike other games you get all the Heroes from the get go. You can buy cosmetic stuff (which by the way is generally community made). The mechanics are a little bit more hardcore than other MOBAs but I think it makes for a better experience over all. Additionally it goes a great job of teaching you the basic through practice matches and tutorials.

I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the genre.

Dedicated Servers. Still very closed and nothing like MW1 or WAW but a step in right direction of fixing the failure of MW2
