If you’re new to Marathon games, Marathon 2 is, in my opinion, actually the best place to start. It improves on nearly every aspect compared to the first game, particularly in its level design.

Granted, it can still present a high barrier to entry due to its difficulty, lack of hand-holding, and a deeply intricate storyline. However, akin to other classic Bungie titles from the 90s, the effort you invest is incredibly rewarding, treating players with a level of maturity seldom found in games.

Having now revisited the game almost 30 years after my first playthrough, I find that it has aged remarkably well and remains one of my all-time favorites.

A classic game that is still fun to play.
The best part is how you’re treated as an adult. There is little hand holding, the story is deep and you have to figure out a lot on your own and the combat is difficult but fair. There is a lot of great and innovative game-mechanical design here which would live on to become industry standards.

The level design is more dated here than in the sequels, but getting lost in the dark maze of the colony ship Marathon is part of the immersive experience.

This is an addictive game, but I've never felt so much that I've wasted time. Games really should move away from the notion that addictive=good.

Early Access Review
This is the most fun I've ever had with a shooter. It doesn't feel like retro, it feels like the future. A new classic!

I loved this game. I was surprised by the emotional impact and the puzzles had a flow unlike any other adventure game I've played, just easy enough so you never really get stuck and difficult enough so it doesn't just feel like an visual novel.
A labor of love, perfect for anyone who grew up playing too many games in the 90's and has struggles with their mental scars. It's not just the edgy Nancy Drew story that it might seem like at first, give it some time and it will show some real depth.
