Dying Light: The Beast – 7/10
60+ hours of strong combat, atmospheric exploration and Crane’s return, but limited RPG elements, shallow skill tree and performance issues – feels like a £25-30 expansion at £49.99. Getting it free with DL2 Ultimate Edition makes it worthwhile; otherwise, wait for a sale.

✅ THE GOOD – What Had Me Hooked
  • Visceral, Gory Combat
Fights feel brutally realistic and intense; there's so much gore. Zombies press forward relentlessly, even after losing limbs as expected. The flamethrower and saw blade additions are perfect.

  • Castor Woods Environment
A standout setting that blends DL1’s countryside feel with DL2’s dense urban ruins. Foggy forests, abandoned cabins, and alpine vistas create a fresh and atmospheric experience.

  • Return of Kyle Crane
Uncovering his story as a sentient volatile after DL1 is a genuine highlight. Roger Craig Smith nails the voice acting once again.

  • Darker, Horror-Focused Nights
Nights feel genuinely unsafe and high-risk again, almost a little too risky. The double XP helps somewhat justify the danger, though additional rewards beyond XP would better balance the challenge.

❌ THE BAD – What Held It Back
  • Weak Storyline and Narrative
The super-soldier sci-fi direction strays from the terrifying virus concept. I prefer slow, shambling hordes that force me to outmanoeuvre and overcome, rather than endurance-test bosses with massive health bars.

  • Underwhelming Progression/Skill System
The talent tree lacks substance for a standalone title. Originally intended as DLC, it offers no real build variety or crafting depth. A lot of them were things we had seen in the previous games.

  • Lackluster Driving Mechanics
Vehicles are drivable but pale in comparison to the robust, upgradeable system in DL1: The Following. They feel adequate yet uninspired.

  • Game’s Optimisation
I could run DL2 maxed out + RT + DLSS Quality @ 120+ FPS, but DL: The Beast required Medium settings for just 80–100 FPS. Texture pop-in, stuttering in dense areas, and DLSS issues at launch were disappointing.
