Early Access Review
Performance has improved a lot since launch, but the flaws are numerous in a way that I don't think will be entirely fixed by full release.

There is this pervasive rubbery-ness that plagues the whole game now, especially with two-handed weapons. Nothing hits with the impact you'd expect, in both ways! Hits that feel like they should knock an enemy out cold, as they would have in the demo, will have no impact. At the same time, I'm constantly getting knocked out by impacts from the enemy that I couldn't even see. I don't know if this is an engine issue, or if mass is not being distributed over a weapon properly, but the combat just feels so unresponsive and trivial now. The more the performance chugs, the worse this problem becomes, the character becomes even harder to control and weapons behave even worse as the framerate drops.

Playing with any sort of strategy feels impossible now. The player doesn't have enough control over the character or weapon to experiment, so every fight starts thoughtful and inevitably turns into swinging wildly in moments after the enemy attacks and just hoping that something will connect. And if it does connect, you might knock them out, or their head might just explode or a limb will just sort of fall off, or you might just accidentally bump into the head of the enemy's axe or a fence post behind you and lose instantly.

The player character is so, so fragile now. When I was starting out, I thought this was just a function of starting with the lowest character weight and being too shrimpy to compete. Now that I'm a little over halfway through the progression and I'm at the 5th weight class, it's exactly the same. Your guy just falls down constantly. He can be knocked over by the feintest pressure against him, or if he clips on some geometry for even a moment. This fragility does not apply to the enemies, however, who will regularly continue fighting for some time after losing a limb or being stabbed all the way through with a polearm.

I was originally on board with the new progression mode, but it is proving to be really tedious. Right now, there are basically three game modes in total: fight one guy, fight several guys, several guys all fighting each other. By the time you've hit rank 3, you've encountered all of them. And it bears repeating, any format other than 1v1 is going to make the performance and all its comorbid consequences on the engine even worse, so I basically only do the champion fights since the duels and brawls don't yield enough money to be worth doing.

What I want out of this game is just for the combat to play like how it did in the playtest but with all the new maps, weapons, and mechanics they've added. A lot of what's listed on the roadmap sounds cool, and the new music/art is all incredible and clearly comes from a place of love, but I honestly cannot believe how much better realized the minute-to-minute gameplay felt in the free, pre-pre-release demo. Maybe all of these bad physics interactions are just a function of poor performance, or maybe my computer is too outdated to run it properly (been playing on a mix of medium/high settings with low foliage, ran the demo on all high settings great), or maybe this updated engine just needs to be tweaked, but right now I'm honestly skeptical that the game will ever be in the state I'm looking for.

no one actually wants to play the game. every encounter is either a 1v3 or chasing a guy around who doesnt want to fight. huge boon for people who dont actually like playing video games but would rather flagrantly waste their own time

Only leaving a review because they really deserve all the praise they get. Truly the greatest comeback story in gaming history.

A truly magical game, and a new step in processing games as art. It has been a long time since I was this enchanted by an experience.

The game is interesting to be sure, with a very unique and consistent aesthetic. It runs well, the interaction between objects works well enough, the combat is fun, the puzzles and scripted encounters at worst gave you something cool to look at. Worth the time and money.

Doesn't play like a strategy game, quite the opposite. The fun comes from how little control you have over your army after you start the combat.

dude ♥♥♥♥ this game it's awesome. it's unacceptably hard sometimes and is the best rouge like i have played by a wide margin. only game i know where save security can become a principle concern when assessing a broken build, that rocks.
