MECHANICS
Karryn’s Prison is a cross-over between an RPG and a management sim. It’s built in RPG Maker and uses a lot of its core mechanics, such as dungeon exploring, turn-based combat, stats, leveling, items and all that. However, the main objective of the game is successfully running a prison. This requires carefully managing income and expenses, maintaining order, deciding on upgrades for the prison, working in side jobs, and developing the skills and abilities of your MC. Several of these side jobs have their own mini-games.

Unlike most other games in this genre, Karryn’s Prison has very solid, balanced and expansive mechanics to handle all this. For example, your MC can earn over 400 different passive traits, which all influence her abilities in meaningful ways. The game therefore has a steep learning curve and will require several playthroughs before you have a good idea of what’s going on.

Controls: keyboard and mouse

STORY
You play as Karryn, the overly talented and self-confident personal secretary of the Emperor. At the start of the game, riots have broken out in a prison facility. To prevent further escalation, the Emperor appoints you to become the prison’s warden and restore order. Your ultimate goal is to overcome the mysterious Captain, who is running the uprising from the deepest floor of the prison.

In order to achieve this, you’ll have to subjugate the prison floor by floor, restore its facilities and maintain a positive cash flow. And of course, you’ll have to find a way to deal with both inmates and prison staff, preferably while maintaining your dignity.

The game isn’t really story-driven; you’re basically creating your own story by the decisions you make. The only stage-gates are the floor bosses. Defeating these will unlock a new floor to explore, new functionality and options, and a bit of story.

QUALITY
From a mechanics perspective, Karryn’s Prison is an exceptionally well-made game. I’m very impressed by the amount of available options and how they tie into the overall game progression. As the developer explicitly states: this game is not a ‘fail-fast-at-everything’ fap-fest. The real challenge – and fun – lies in figuring out the right strategy to overcome the prison’s challenges. This requires a lot of tactical decision making, during combat, side jobs and prison management.

The production quality of the game is very good; the visuals, interface, writing and level design are all nicely done. I also didn’t encounter any bugs to speak off. The only downside is that some of the tasks required to earn money and/or maintain order may become a bit repetitive, depending on how you decide to do it. But the rest of the game more than makes up for this.


SUBJECT
The lewd in Karryn’s Prison is solely about Karryn having sex with other prison staff and inmates (human and otherwise). If you play the game as intended, this has a very gradual progression: Karryn will be resisting seduction and harassment attempts at first, while suppressing her own desires. However, this becomes increasingly difficult as the game progresses. Many events and options may awaken these desires, pushing Karryn ever so slowly further down the road to depravity.

The lewd is heavily focused on (male-on-female) group sex.

CONTENT
Quite a lot of CG-based scenes and animations (I still have to complete the game, so not sure how many). An interesting feature is that there are no visual novel-like scenes; instead, all scenes are interactive (as part of either combat or a mini-game).

ACCESS
You can run into lewd scenes in several ways: during combat, after losing combat, while working in side jobs or as part of random events. In nearly all cases, your status and decisions will determine what happens. If you successfully suppress your desires and pleasure, make the right management decisions and win your battles, you can get quite far without seeing much lewd. However, once you start sliding down the depravity ladder, there is no way back.

QUALITY
All CG’s are of high quality. In addition, the scenes felt very immersive, even though most of them are part of random encounters. This sense of immersion is largely due to the underlying passives system, which (rather brilliantly) ties all that happens to you into your character development.

At the time of writing, Karryn’s Prison is my favorite adult game on Steam by far. Remtairy has managed to cook up an uniquely entertaining and challenging game. It actually invites you to dive into the gameplay, while still serving up lewd in all the right places. This is a welcome breath of fresh hair between the hundreds of other adult ‘games’ out there, where gameplay usually is an afterthought at best. Oh, and there’s a lot of replay value too, since you definitely won’t get to the bottom of this one in a single playthrough.

The only bad thing with a game as good as this is that most of the others now look pale by comparison. Luckily, I still have a few more floors to explore in Karryn’s Prison.
