so once upon a time, there was a studio called Overkill and it released a game called Payday that made L4D and Killing Floor look like children. now, they've done it again and taken Payday and improved upon the game.

a lot of the concepts and heists are referenced from the older game and made into gameplay elements here. so, there's progression in terms of the mechanics. the game is currently, very easy to pick up, though the veterans who don't have the patience might want to steer well clear of the noobs till they get the hang of it. when it first came out, Payday 2 didn't have a lot of heists, so it got repetitive very fast. now, it's got a lot of new heists and more than 1 way to tackle most heists. this is turning into a 2nd Team Fortress 2 for me, so that's a very good thing; there's replayability and above all, it's fun.

i'd also recommend playing this game with a tight group of buddies, with a very reliable friend or 2 for the stealth jobs.

the only issues currently are the team mate AI pathfinding and helpfulness. the team mate AIs are still not very good and more often than not, will run around in circles trying to find a way to revive you if you're downed. they don't keep up with players well either and generally are completely helpless after a certain difficulty level. ironically, the older AI from the Payday 1 was cleverer because they stick very close to you and if one of them is already reviving you, the rest will cover the AI that's reviving; as opposed to all of them trying to revive you and getting swatted away by shields. the final bit is the stealth mechanics. some missions are nearly impossible to stealth despite being stealthable. Big Bank is an example since guards tend to notice one of the hacked computers or other jobs that involve a very large, very obvious vault. hopefully, these get fixed in time.

still.... when with human team mates, best game around for quick, dirty shooty FPS with loads of cash to steal.

verdict? 8/10

yes. you should get this game for the following reasons: insanity, over-the-top customizability for most of the part and the fact that the game is as easy to pick up as tf2, so there's still the matter of skill levels.

hard to believe that this game is free really but that's the part where they borrow tf2's market strategy; cosmetics cost real cash. which is incredibly fair, seeing as the cosmetics do NOT affect gameplay short of how many laughs you get out of it.

controls are reasonably similar to CoD, not a bad thing. means most of the keys are where they should be, that's a good thing. there're also a decent number of modes and so far as i have played, the game does give you reasonably good matchmaking. so, that means if you're already good at tf2 or shooters with proper rocket launchers like Battlefield or Halo, you've already got a head up on the rest of them.

get this game for the laughs, not because it's free...well probably that too.

So far, so good. if you're the sort of person who loves a good mental challenge, this is the game for you. Uber's upped the computer's aggression and it shows. very fun to watch your artillery pieces smash other things into pieces. just be prepared to be visited in kind by your fellow players who might just drop a moon on you.

i wouldn't worry too much about the price tag, for what it it's worth, this is a pretty good game. also, since it is beta, you'll be privvy to how the devs craft the game and also help to develop it by giving feedback.

better than DoTA many times over.
