This attack occurred just before 8:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, December 7, 1941. At that time, the United States was a neutral country in World War II. The attack on Hawaii, along with other U.S. territories, prompted the United States to formally enter World War II on the side of the Allies on December 8, 1941, the day following the attack. The Japanese military leadership referred to the operation as the Hawaii Operation and Operation AI, and it was also called Operation Z during its planning phase.
