Writing this as the credits roll on one of the best Metroidvanias I've ever played.

I love Turbo Kid, the movie, the soundtrack, and now the game. Watch the movie first and then start playing this game right away! It's a direct sequel and it masterfully captures everything that made the movie great, recontextualizes the narrative to fit a videogame, and expands the world in very captivating ways.

All of the critical stuff is expertly dialed in; the controls, the mechanics, the core gameplay loops, the difficulty balance, the urge to explore, the art, the animation, the sound FX, the music, and the story.

The unique factors that make Turbo Kid a must play in the genre are the characters, the story they're woven into, the setting, and the bike. Man the bike is so much fun, and so well animated even when I ate ♥♥♥♥ I couldn't get mad because it just looked so good on screen.

The setting stands out because Middle Waste feels simultaneously so alive and so authentic to the world building from the movie. Everything is falling apart everywhere, and everyone is just trying to survive. I love that different areas have different background characters living their little lives as I blaze past them, fighting my way through whatever the baddies are for that section. That does a lot to distinguish this game from other Metroidvanias where you're either in a town area with NPCs or killing everything in sight.

Finally, the characters and the story. It's incredibly rare in a 2D Metroidvania that I have felt a connection to the main character and their friends and foes. Turbo Kid absolutely nails motivating me to help the Kid and his new friends with clever, heartfelt, funny writing that matches the tone from the movie. The writers use a light touch, and spread it around between quick conversations and the Kids own notes on places, people, and things to do. All of which are optional, but they add up to a narrative whole that is very compelling and genuinely engaging.

I love this game! Highly recommended. Can't wait to rewatch the movie and replay this game in the future.

Beautiful music and art style, engaging story, tight controls, excellent level design that is clever as heck. Totally recommend Death's Door to anyone who enjoys Zelda or Souls games. It combines the two in a very unique way and then builds on top of that to make something unlike anything I've played before.

I can't stop playing this game. It's fantastic. I am going to go pour myself some coffee and play this game again right now, in fact. And there's nothing anyone can do to stop me. Everyone with a childhood should play this game.
