The stories are solid in both games, but Max Payne 3 has a darker tone with more mature elements. Sleeping dogs could be compared to your average Hong Kong action film, but the game is vibrant with a clear identity and changes the sandbox genre in little subtle ways that ultimately make it a very refreshing experience. Honestly it comes down to whether you prefer an action game with a dark/mature themes, nice gunplay, and multiplayer or a sandbox game with deep/fun combat, lots of extra objects, arcade style driving, and high octane action.

Both games are probably some of my favorite games for 2012. I'm a hardcore Max Payne fan, so I picked that up instantly; however, if I had to choose only one then I would say it depends on your personal preference. Max Payne 3 is story driven and will take roughly 10-15 hours to complete the main story without trying too hard for the achievements. It also has a multiplayer component that is constantly being updated with new content and can be pretty fun IF you can find a game. Sleeping dogs is by far my favorite sandbox game that I've played so far. The combat in that game is so well done and there is plenty of content and action to keep you pushing for progress. It will probably take 18-25 hours to complete the story and complete the majority of side events. I've completed the main story in 17 hours and now spent the rest of my game time doing the additional content.
