"How are we not talking about this game?" was the first thing that came to my mind when the credits started rolling.

This game is something special and it is baffling to me that the fact that a Hearts of Iron IV mod in the workshop was the reason I picked up this game and it seriously undersells how unique this game is in its execution.

Let's start at the beginning. Suzerain is a political drama set in Sordland a fledgeling democracy with you as its third newly elected President. The country is plagued with Economic problems, political turmoil, corruption, staunch conservatism and more than one problematic neighbour. The game hands you the reigns and allows you to deal with the problems how you see fit.

That last statement is more than true. This game has such an interesting way of handling choices. The saying "actions speak louder than words" is such an accurate way of describing this game. While you might start with one vision of how to handle your predicament at the beginning, it might not be what you do when push comes to shove. You might promise your people or advisors one thing to then go back on it later when the reality of your situation sets in.

Or you could let your idealistic side take over and push through regardless of what your advisors tell you. It is a masterful idea to set this game through the perspective of a single person and have nearly all the interactions through dialogue. You are but one of the many people with a vision for this country and you only have your own eyes to see it with.

All of this is supported by the incredible writing of this game, the most obvious one being the writing of the world it is set in. As soon as the prologue begins and the choices that are offered to you it became clear to me how well they were thought out. The choices offered to you are rarely black or white and give you plenty of granularity to allow you to choose one that suits your intentions. The interactions you have are written in such a way it feels like you are talking to actual people with their ideas and backgrounds, not just some politicians or some abstract connection for the game to allow you to make choices.

And those choices are something else as I said before, the game makes a clear distinction between saying and acting when handling situations. But it is when those moments arrive forcing you to make a tough decision that will leave you with your face in your hands, with the bitter-sweet feeling afterwards echo of thoughts "Did I make the right decision?". Trust me the answer is rarely black or white.

I could go on longer about this game. Like how it takes your preexisting political ideas by putting them to the test in an impossible situation. How the game forces you into ironman mode. The human aspect of it all. And just so much more. It also should be stated that the game does have problems here and there that should be addressed, but when looking at the game as whole I think the developers fully achieved what they set out to do.

I will give a small anecdote from my playtime to finish this off. When my presidency started I fully believed in turning Sordland into a prosperous nation for its people. But my ambitious were soon shattered as the actions of one man soon set the country ablaze, it had only been my first day. From there on the choice of the name of the game "Suzerain" became quite clear to me and it proceeded to hang over me for the rest of the game.

Torpor games I look forward to see the rest of your work and especially what you will do with the Rizia Storypack. I will be keeping an eye on you.
