This is easily one of the most savage carnage sandboxes out there. I haven't found the level of moment to moment engagement this game provides anywhere else, and it's in the best shape it's ever been in right now.

Fun pick up and put down game with a good mix of Rogue-lite progression and randomized maps to keep things fun even after your first few clears.

Update: much better queue times. Comfy time sink game,

--

Queue times must be improved. >1hr during west coast afternoons nearly across the board on all servers is too much. Eager to try again in the future once things stabilize.

This has been a hobby game of mine since D1 dropped on consoles. It's in one of the best places it's been content and balance-wise since launch. For curious potential new players: with some patience during the leveling and mod collection phase of the game there's a lot to like here at the mid-game point and beyond.

Dark Souls PtD with built in hi-rez texture pack, a less glitchy fps cap unlock, and DSFix built in. What's not to like? Lots of fun playing through again years after my last playthrough.

Early Access Review
Updating review after the desync bugfix! The 8/4/20 patch did as advertised and did greatly reduce the number of desyncs my group and I experienced.

This is doing a great job scratching the online dungeon crawler itch my group and I have been having for a while!

I will miss this game when it's gone. My friends and I picked Atlas Reactor up before there were seasons and the only way to play it was to buy it full price. Devs were frequently queuing up in premades and almost no game made it passed turn 4 with any time banks left on either side. It's been years. None of us regret the decision at all. Since then we've always come back to it every few days, each time remarking on how nothing really fills the same niche. Hope the brilliant people behind this game are on to bigger and brighter things, I'm certainly looking forward to what's next!

It's been fun Atlas and community. Thanks for the fun times!

Note to those that are long time fans of the game and considering this as a skin for the Last Stand game type. This does not change the model of either the captain or the dreadnought you can summon in Last Stand, which is a shame because both look amazing!

This game provided the perfect mix of loot and character progression that I had been looking for for so many years. Still a game I come back to every once in a while and thoroughly enjoy.

UPDATE:

The miracle patch has dropped. A little later than initially planned, but it's here. Has it solved every problem the game has? No. Has it introduced new problems of its own? Yes. Has it taken the game in a direction that gives me hope for its future? Yes, absolutely. The patch notes read like a reader's digest of the major issues that have been reported across the community since launch. Personally I've had much more enjoyable matches since the patch, and the same is true for the people I play with. As the meta resettles itself there are bound to be further tweaks required but I feel that this is a strong showing of Relic's awareness of the game's balance and their commitment to try and keep pushing the game to a better place. I'm happily changing my review to positive in light of this.

-- Original review follows --

Currently this game has some balance issues resulting in extremely limited unit/doctrine choices being viable in multiplayer due to how strong certain races are (*cough* Eldar *cough*). It's kept me from playing this game nearly as much as I've been wanting to just because of how ruled by meta builds it has become and how unfun being forced into specific choices I feel, especially in the face of how many different combinations of doctrines/elites/units there are to try.

Relic has been up front about when they would try to address this, and this week on the 24th we'll see what they've come up with, assuming they hold to the date. I'm writing this review now as an avid Dawn of War fan that really, REALLY, wants to see this game succeed. My hope is that after the patch drops and I've had a chance to play around with the new changes I'm able to come back to this review and flip my current standing on whether this is a game that'll live long enough to be worth paying for. Right now it is not.
