As of writing this it’s been about a two months since the release of Bonelab. Is it worth the $40 asking price? Short answer, no. Long answer, it depends. (Tl;dr at the end)

If you are in the market for a sandbox VR game with full-body immersion and a relatively full modding scene, then sure go for it. It has Tactical Trials, Arenas, Sandbox, Parkour, and Experimental modules; there’s theoretically something for everyone. However, if you’re like me you were probably hoping for a campaign to rival Boneworks, and while the content is good, the length is disappointingly short.

Let’s take a look at each module:

Tac Trial: Your goal is to kill all of the enemies in the area and try to get a good time—very satisfying in VR as you can approach the combat encounters however you wish.

Arena: Kill all of the enemies. That’s it. Simple but effective.

Parkour: You are tasked with completing various objectives like going from A-B or getting all the keys in any way you see fit—again, rather satisfying in VR.

Sandbox: Bonelab really does bring me back to my Garry’s Mod days when I was young and succeeds in reinvigorating that creative feeling I desire. Build, kill, destroy, and create to your heart’s content.

Experimental: It’s difficult to categorize this section as everything here doesn’t have its own proper category per se. For example there’s bowling but big, a tower climbing level, and a mirror level.

The modding scene is rather robust and not overly complex to use, or so I’m told. Although at the time of writing the in-game mod downloader isn’t implemented, setting up the repository is very simple. There’s all sorts of fun stuff on mod.io ranging from silly or overpowered avatars to outlandish or realistic weaponry; pick your poison! There’s also a fair amount of custom, albeit seemingly rudimentary, levels, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy there.

Overall I see Bonelab as more of a tool for future endeavors rather than a standalone game; a playable SDK.

Tl;dr Only consider buying it if you want to experience sandbox-type stuff in VR and are curious about VR modding.

Not sure if I'm missing anything as I only have about 37 minutes of playtime, but it's a very cool experience! Short, sweet, spooky, and scratches that backroom itch just right.

If you love the idea of the Backrooms and walking simulators, definitely get this. I mean come on, it's free--what have you got to lose?

It's a mess through and through. Difficulty is insane, visuals are messy, enemy spawns are ridiculous, and the gunplay is clunky. I can't even be bothered to write much more than that.

Do not buy.

The game is extremely fast, fluid, and fun. The 3 big F's, if you will. Each weapon serves a distinct purpose and you can't help but feel like you are the star of your own Kung Fu B-movie. The platforming is usually pretty easy and non-intrusive as well as being well placed in combat arenas. The environments are astoundingly beautiful, although I couldn't tell where I was sometimes--larger than life, and all that.

The only real complaint I have with this game is that it's rather short; you may notice I only have about 6 hours in the game. I don't usually consider myself good with these types of games, so if someone like me can finish it in 6 hours, then something is lacking.

Overall, a lot of fun and harkens back to the good ol' pewpew era of yesteryear.

Get it on sale, though. Not worth the $50 price tag as of writing this.

It's a short walking sim in another dimension with guns, basically. The quality is definitely there, but $20 for it is way too much for too little. As you can see by my play time, it only took me around 2 hours to complete, and although I enjoyed those 2 hours I can't help but feel slightly gypped.

The Good:
+ Weapons: They feel fun to use and are very pretty. Ammo is also fairly plentiful, so don't shy away from pew-pewing!
+ Environments: Very nice and well detailed.
+ Enemy Design: Although lacking in variety, the enemies that do exist are very interesting. I enjoyed how for the first enemy type you could remove his arms.
+ Responsiveness: The combat is fun and very precise in what it's trying to do, by which I mean shooting an enemy and seeing it light on fire means it is about to die.

The Neutral:
~Movement: I enjoyed the somewhat clunky movement, as it made me feel like I was there as a bystander and not another Doomguy.

The Bad:
- Story: It's tolerable and nothing abysmal like Borderlands 3, but it feels very shoehorned or random in some instances.
- Progression: You get all of the guns way too quickly.
- Enemy Variety: Too little when it comes to the types of enemies you face.
- Length: Depends for everyone, but in my own experience it felt to be way too short to justify the cost of $20.

With all of this said, I did enjoy my time playing it, but I just wish it were balanced better, had a more coherent story, and was longer. I wish there were a "Mixed/Neutral" option when reviewing because "No" doesn't truly reflect my feelings towards it.

(PS: For the devs, you have something strong here. It's definitely a unique idea and I ADORE these types of environments and stories! I wish you nothing but the best, Bleakmill!)

Either I'm just super unaware of my surroundings, or this is genuinely one of the most challenging Portal mods I've ever played.

Kudos to the dev for making one hell of an experience! Made me use portals in ways I've never done before. :)

Oh boy, this one is hard to write.

I LOVE Krieg, man. He's a great character and this DLC doesn't do him enough justice. The story is surprisingly fine with a few interesting elements surrounding Krieg's backstory and how his two counterparts interact with each other. This is like the opposite of Borderlands 3's main campaign: Decent story, mediocre gameplay.

It feels too short and not fast-paced enough to be worth its price and serves as nothing more than some exposition with some sloppy gameplay slapped on in the background.

If you want some more story, get this DLC. Elsewise spend your money elsewhere.

(Still better than Bounty of Blood!)

A very fun and interesting addition to Borderlands 3.

Although the story isn't anything superb, I was more engrossed in this short few-hour story than throughout the entirety of the main campaign.

Worth looking into, but if you're not die hard with Borderlands content, wait for a sale.

A very fun romp through a space casino.

It manages to feel very Borderlands-y without overstaying its welcome. It is very silly and provided my friends and me with hours of entertainment. The loot is generally awesome and the story is shockingly decent.

Overall, worth the full price.

This thing was just a mess through and through.

Very uninteresting story elements, strange or uninteresting characters, and mediocre pacing at best. The environments were top notch, but that's about all I can say for positives.

I highly recommend avoiding this DLC unless you REALLY want to explore Japanese-Western environments with an awful story.

This is by far one of the worst excuses for a DLC I have ever played. Just...don't bother with it.
