For years, I've been looking for a quality, non-competitive multiplayer game. Everything nowadays is either monetized to death or expects you to put your all into every match to prove your superiority. The days of just hanging out are long-gone in these kinds of titles, and there isn't much sense of an actual community left.

Unless you're a dwarf.

There's nothing beyond the price tag, save some cosmetic dlc. It's a co-op fps, but it's not a looter shooter. The goal isn't necessarily to kill the most bugs, but to get the job done. And get rich.

This game is the antidote to an awful year. Get this, play this, get your friends, remember Karl.

Rock and Stone!

It's only after almost two years and many, many failed campaigns and dead brothers that I can say for certain that, while it may be frustrating at times, Battle Brothers is probably worth it. I mean, long as you know a few things up front:
[/list]
  • This game is hard, and can be unfair. You will run into fights or contracts you cannot win. The retreat mechanic helps alleviate this, but nothing in this game is without consequence, and your brothers will think it cowardly.
  • You will lose characters. Trying to keep your best two-hander or duelist alive is less important than making sure the hits you take from a fight don't drag your business down trying to recover. Sure, that 1.5k crown knight will be a good fighter, but one or two unlucky turns can quickly flush that cash and equipment down the toilet.
  • Some monsters are completely unbalanced if you're not prepared. Alps, Hexen, and Unholds especially. Read up on these guys before you fight.
All that being said, you come out with great stories, clinch victories, and badass brothers each run. It's a challenging game, but it's rewarding. This is basically medieval XCOM with no moral compass. You are in the mercenary business to make money, not truly for righting wrongs or saving lives.

UPDATE 27/6/2018: On June 25th, Dire Wolf Digital removed the Red Shell Application from Eternal, and so my one grievance has been rendered moot. I now wholeheartedly reccomend Eternal, with the caveat that, should you decide to play it, you should also be aware of how the devs are communicating things like this which surround the game. They have promised to improve their communications in general, which is a good second step.

I will be keeping my original review intact down below unchanged, but now only the first paragraph is relevant to how I feel about Eternal, which is overwhelmingly positive. My biggest concern was with the lack of communication about an adware application being in the game, followed closely by the lack of an opt-in/out option for Red Shell. I am reinstalling, and shall be enjoying this great CCG once again.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

So I got this game last month and found it extremely enjoyable. Eternal seems well-developed, the setting (though it seems a little confusing to me) is aesthetically-pleasing, and its monetization model is both fair and balanced to avoid pay-to-win situations. In my opinion, this game is easily more robust than any virtual Magic: The Gathering title Wizards has put out and far more balanced than Hearthstone. It takes elements from both and finds a nice middle ground. I would have reccomended Eternal.

But then today I discovered that the developers, without any notification or apparent forethought, put the Red Shell application into their game for analytical purposes. You will find other recent reviews decrying this decision, and it seems the devs are leaning full in on having Red Shell in their game. I am currently in the process of uninstalling Eternal for this very reason.

It is unclear what Red Shell will be doing with the info they collect (including what other games you play on Steam, your browser history, and their stated purpose of pinpointing exactly how people came by Eternal), but it is known that, once their clients pass that info onto Red Shell, they have the go-ahead to sell it to other, unknown parties.

Dire Wolf Digital's current position is that their extremely polished CCG must have Red Shell installed for analytical purposes. I do not take kindly to being spied upon because I want to play a particular game. Red Shell does not only look at your Eternal analytics, but goes well beyond that to other areas of your computer. Until Dire Wolf Digital removes Red Shell, I would strongly urge you to steer clear of this game.

"Olse came to the Kingdom of Swadia in the early spring, gathered his men, and began to find his fortune, fighting in Calradia's wars as a mercenary. After a particularly horrific bout with Belir Noyan of the Khergit Khanate, he found refuge in the Rhodok Mountains, protected by King Graveth. Impressed with his skill in battle, despite having retreated, King Graveth offered his protection to Olse, and made him a Count, bestowing upon him the dungheap that was the village of Yaragar. Within six months, the Kingdom of Swadia was no more, carved up by the Nords, the Rhodoks, and the Khergits. Count Olse was gifted for his valor with Culmarr Castle shortly before the Northmen attacked.
"In a little more than a year after he arrived in Calradia, Count Olse had four villages and two castles, as well as marshalship of the Kingdom of the Rhodoks, which had grown to encompass all of former Swadia and most of the Kingdom of the Nords. But, after all the fighting and death, was he truly happy?

"Yes, because he had a hot wife, too."

This game is a beautiful and awesome experience, nailing its source material's tone while keeping itself unique among the flurry of TBSRPG's that have come out into the market since XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The campaign, which takes between 8-12 hours, is well-worth the price of admission, and the game questions not your morality, nor your honor. The game consistently questions your judgment. Let these guys into your caravan? Trust the helmeted-guy over the crazy-looking one? Send out your damage tank, leaving your archers exposed? While The Banner Saga isn't the most emotionally-impactful game I've ever played, it's probably the most sobering. I wholeheartedly recommend this game at full price.

Also, you get to be a viking. :D

This is a short, bittersweet game about a badger and her kids. Her 5 kids. That you have to feed and protect from the elements and a hawk. This is seriously the 2nd most sobering game I've ever played (1st is The Walking Dead still), and the story is as primal as it is simple.

But yeah, get this game if you want a nice-looking and heart-wrenching 1.5 hours. You won't be disappointed. :)

Wow. Just wow.

Okay, not gonna spoil the story, but I was surprised about the Christian and Taoist themes. And they're even at conflict. The story is surprisingly simple at the outset and even at the end in terms of presentation, but I'm still thinking about it. Kudos.

The gameplay is the best part of this besides the artwork. It's smooth, intuitive, intense, and cinematic. And it flows excellently. Also kudos.

All in all, don't be decieved by appearances here. Get this game. DO EET!

So I clicked on this because it seemed cool. Then I downloaded it because it's a F2P multiplayer tactical rpg that's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ TURN-BASED. WORDS CAN'T DESCRIBE THE NERDGASM.

Anyways, this game nails its mechanics and its atmosphere perfectly, though there are some connectivity and freezing issues at present. Luckily, I've only had one game freeze. This is also not Pay to Win, but Play to Win. I highly reccomend this game to everyone who's even interested in strategy or vikings. Especially that last part.

If dost hoists, dost musteth acquire this wonderfully violent entertainment! If thou dost not hoist, RETREAT YE BACK FROM WHENCE YE CAME.

In all seriousness, this game is amazingly fun and brutal. It has some of the best bad voice acting and awesome melee combat I've ever seen. Make sure you play the tutorial, though, because otherwise you'll be lost and frustrated. The only gripe I have with this game is it's odd incompatability with Steam Community, since not once have I been able to join my friends' games through Steam, and I'm not the only one with this issue. A patch is coming, though, so hopefully this gets fixed. I wholeheartedly reccomend this game. :D
