To prevent stuttering in the game, change the multiplayer mode from internet to lan. Also ctrl+alt+del and change the priority of dead island from below normal to normal. Ever since I did that, not a single problem!

A lot of graphical options just are not available from the in game setup. If you want to make the game more beautiful or just get vsync working go to "C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings" and open up the video.src in notepad and edit it up. The first half of the file is commented out with ! and explains pretty much how to edit the actual config. To get vsync working just type in vsync() in the lower half. There is an Audio.src with more audio options but I have not edited it.

Now if you want to play with friends and set your game to LAN or maybe the multiplayer server is just down(It currently is) you can all download a vpn client like hamachi or comodo and use it to create a virtual lan in which you can connect with each other.
