Halo is fun actually.

UPDATE: Now crashes on startup on Steam Deck. Microsoft and 343 love enshitification.

UPDATE: It appears that having a high resolution texture pack enabled was causing the crashing on startup. I had to go to the DLC section and disable high res texture packs to get infinite working again. So here's the real review: Halo is fun. I like Halo Infinite, but it feels like every update they do everything they can to prevent me from playing the game. Whether it was the load time issues in the Winter Update or the crashing issues that seem to have started in season 4, there's always some technical problem that makes it hard to play the game. I LIKE Halo. I don't need them to release "content" every quarter to find the game enjoyable. I get the feeling that Halo is on life support. They're doing as little as they can to prop up the game because their brand needs Halo to continue, but they aren't willing to give the franchise the commitment and investment it deserves to be relevant and technically sound in 2023.

At a minimum, please just pick up a Steam Deck and turn on Halo before your release an update. If it works, release, if it doesn't, patch. Please? Thanks.

This is a perfect survival-craft game. It's a must play for anyone and is extremely fun with friends.

Very good kitty. IGN 10/10 the game really makes you feel like a kitty.

Plays well on Steam Deck with a 30 fps cap enforced by Gamescope/Steam Deck. Disappointing that it can't do 40, but that's what happens when someone uses Unreal Engine on PC, apparently. Deck still felt great when a locked frame rate was chosen.

Got all achievements. Good game.

A couple notes on the game: It was challenging for me to get into the game and appreciate the combat until two things happened:

1) I had to play through and beat the campaign once.
Honestly this isn't that bad. The campaign isn't exceptionally long. What this gives you is access to all of the base functions (combat abilities).

2) I had to practice using a TON of different builds.
There honestly is not "a build" that is good enough to carry you for the entire game. I used probably seven or eight different "builds" that focused on accomplishing a specific goal. These goals generally came down to three broad categories:
First: a build that maximized burst damage on a single target. If you play around, it's easy to make a build that allows you to burst a target with nearly 6000 damage.
Second: a build that maximized AOE damage. This usually was a build that focused on doing about 1000 damage to enemies within a certain area.
Third: a build that emphasized NOT using the Turn() mechanic. There are certain parts of the game that I COULD NOT clear while using Turn(). Contrary to certain reviews, it is absolutely possible to formulate builds that bypass Turn(). They are not easy to use and will not provide the results of the first two builds, but they maximize up-time and allow you to play (relatively) very defensively.
