I'm giving this a meh for now. It definitely doesn't deserve the 90+ % review score as of yet.

It's really cool they are doing the Dwarf Fortress / Rimworld concept in 3d now with a height layers and something resembling graphics. Downside is there's not that much tech and options yet and updates have been kind of slow. If they keep at it though, this will be a great option in a few years.

People were like "ooooh this is really cool" but in reality it's just polished with graphics but the game systems are bare minimum and will take years to flesh out. I'm on 20 hours because that's how long it took me to see most of the progression tree so I haven't played it in months. Updates have been really slow so I haven't had a reason to boot it up again. Almost a waste of money honestly.

People get happy or mad mostly based on what they read or hear from others. It's all based on expectations. Some nobody delivering something decent is hailed as a hero but a big studio delivering the same quality is put down like a rabid dog.

I already liked the game when it was not in the best state yet and I could run it on medium at best. Now with an upgraded PC and the 2.1 patch, damn. This is freaking amazing.

Car handling is still poopy but apart from that I'm madly in love with this game and will probably buy Phantom Liberty after I finish my second new play through.

Update 26-06-2024
We have mods. We have the economy update. We have me playing the game again. Get this game but try to find it cheaper or wait for a sale.

There is no real alternative and the redemption arc has started.

Don't expect the game to be complete this year though. They're taking their sweet time. It's okay because this is a 10-15 year project. It just should not have launched until now.

------

Update 27-03-2024
PDX mods got a public beta release. There are already some mods on there but apart from being able to load a custom map and start building, I did not see the mods work. Today is not the day to start playing again.

------

A new addition and a change to negative for now:
I assumed this would be released with official Steam Workshop mod support. It did not. Then to my dismay, I found out they wanted to have their own platform. Sometimes this is good but not usually so the doubt started to set in. Now the last word of the week came out and they say mod support beta is expected to launch late march and mod support release launches somewhere around AUGUST? That is almost a year after release!?!?!

I hate using crappy third party modding software. But I hate manually modding even more. I'm disappointed and I'll leave my review like this until it's fixed. I'll probably enjoy the game in the meantime but for the coming weeks I'm done.

On the plus side, I have upgraded my PC and a few weeks later Cyberpunk 2077 2.1 Phantom Liberty came out and have really been enjoying that. Maybe CO will do the same and in that case I'll see you in 3 years.

------

My previous, positive review:
Roads are dynamic now and highway ramps are good by default. They had a chance to learn from the first version and they did. Colossal Order will keep development up. I'm enjoying it now and can't wait for how amazing this will be in a year or so when the modding community has gotten up to speed.

10 years old and still a buggy mess. The updates are cool and all put it's like they're allergic to polish.

My play time is so low because I can't stand it for more than 15 minutes at a time and it's been like that for years.

The hours of content is insane. Partly because driving can be very slow in this game, partly because there are lots of missions on every map and there are quite a few maps and vehicles.

If you enjoy Spintires or Mudrunner, this game is still worth the price just because the amount of good content this game adds. I'd even say consider getting a dlc bundle when they're in discount and you'll be hauling cargo through the mud or snow for months or even years.

It does help heaps to have a friend to play with, this game is at it's best when you're struggling together and helping each other out.

PS Devs please let us have double winch with our friends. 1 cable per player truck would be amazing but just being able to have 2 connected to one truck would already be a game changer.

You can't go wrong for the current discount price of €6,-
This game is HUGE and it plays just like previous Elder Scrolls games. Leveling is a mix of skill points and practise. Now that I have played it, I would gladly pay well over €6,- for the base game. Grab the discount while you can.

If you have a wheel, this is the one for downloading all the mods, Nordschleife trackdays and drifting. Don't bother on gamepad. Usually the first game I launch after connecting my wheel because I can start a few laps on any track with any car I feel like.

Career mode? Start PC2.
Club racing? Start RF2.

But this is my most played sim.

It's frikkin arcadey and drifting is still weird like in the first game but you know what?

Forza Horizon eats ♥♥♥♥ on map design. This is the best game now for open world cruising, the car handling is good enough for what this game is and the bikes boats and planes actually feel pretty nice.

So don't buy this for legit drift battles on gamepad. CarX and Forza own that game. Buy this for the open world, the variation in vehicles and the fun quick switch function that lets you change for instance from a plane into a car or boat at any altitude so you can feel like the whale from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (or the bowl of petunia's if that's what you prefer).
