This is the best game in library. And in all libraries.

This game is worth buying as long as you're aware of the multiplayer issues.

At the time of writing I've played the majority of this game with my partner who is on a different computer in the same house. The connection is very stable, with no other games demonstrating problems. I'm assuming the game is remotely hosted (no LAN), based on the problems being encountered, but if not then there's really no excuse.

Fundamentally the multiplayer works, but suffers from numerous problems. It's laggy, up to a one second response time for input in some cases. Almost unpredictably the game will pause, process for a bit, then reload the level as if a day transition had occurred. Neither of these problems are as bad as the third though.

The third problem is the desynchronisation between players. You could be playing a different game and not know it, as there's no way to know if you're out of sync. I've played for an entire in-game day not knowing that the game on my screen was different to the game on my partner's screen. Very frustrating.

If you want this for multiplayer, don't buy it yet. For singleplayer it's fine.

This one of the very few reviews I've written. I am annoyed enough to actually write one.

A number of my friends and I acquired this game through a recent Humble Bundle, expecting a few hours' fun with what reads like a really nice idea for an asymmetric multiplayer game. What we got was a bug ridden, slowly performing, confusing mess across multiple different systems. Let me explain.

The game has many problems, most obviously bugs: menus appearing unexpectedly and staying there throughout gameplay; unexpected freezing which forces a quit to menu or process kill; bizarre drops in mouse sensitivity or input tracking; variable framerates; disconnects from multiplayer games yet remaining in the player list; minimal feedback on player/monster actions; the list goes on. We were playing on a mixture of systems, some with NVidia cards and some with AMD, all using Windows 7, and I can say now that we've not had anywhere near as many problems with any other game.

The next bunch of issues relate to the game design itself. The basic elements of the gameplay are there, but they seem to be at the level found in a lot of early version mods available for other games. Playing as any of the monsters is actually very shallow in terms of gameplay, and playing as the survivors doesn't really feel like anything beyond semi-coordinated trial and error. There's barely any interaction with levels beyond picking items up and opening doors, the latter of which has a needlessly awkward grab mechanic that in practice doesn't justify its existence. The items are difficult to spot as well, which results in the survivor's role rapidly becoming one of frustration and confusion, especially when playing a new level.

As a group Damned sounded fun, and we play in a LAN environment so we hoped the horror aspect would make it a good investment. As it turns out the gameplay is barely fleshed out, and when the game does run it either runs very badly or encounters problems. I just can't recommend it, not with many other games offering much better for a lot less than the Steam price at the time of writing (£15).

The worst bit? We experienced all the above in an hour. A single hour. It literally took 60 minutes to exhaust patience of five PC gamers who are happy to mod, tweak, upate drivers, and customise controls, in order to get something working. Did we give it enough time? You decide; we found something else to play.
