I cannot recommend a game that crashes on startup no matter what I do to try and fix it. If you're at all interested in the game, be warned that you may not be able to even play it. EA ought to be crucified for this.

UPDATE: Frosty Mod Manager trips up EA Anti Cheat and stops the game from launching, this happens for all EA games with an anti-cheat even if you're only using Frosty for one game. If you're having similar problems you can find a fix online. EA should still be crucified for adding their awful anti-cheat.

This game is CBT.
This game teases you with hope only to lead you into a boulder.
This game forced me to experience the stages of grief, more than once.
This game led me on a journey of pain and suffering.

I love this game.
You should play Dark Souls II.
It is an unforgettable experience.

Thank you Techland for making a janky-ass climbing system that will kill you on top of a mediocre open world zombie game. Seriously though, I don't understand the love for this game.

The story is pretty bland, its twists uninteresting and the premise of a city in the middle of an outbreak is a dead horse that has been beaten to hell and back. It simply elicited no interest or emotional impact.
The characters are fairly forgettable, both good and evil. The residents of the Tower and the Runners are uninteresting to me, as are the various residents of safe zones around the map. To me they are background characters that I will either buy from, accept quests or outright ignore. The GRE and the Ministry of Defense I'm not sure are even worth talking about, they don't have any substance. The main antagonist, Rais, honestly feels like a secondary antagonist, his character had so little impact on me as a player. Beyond the obvious "Bad guy, fight him and win", he comes across as a thuggish bootleg Liquid Snake with his schizo "philosophies". His character origins feel illogical to me and his only saving grace is the guy who VA'd him. Harran isn't a bad setting, but it's not especially interesting and has a lot of empty space filled with generic enemies and loot.

Game play wise it's a mixed bag. The climbing system is pretty expansive, but the downside is jank. Glitches and bugs with the system ensure at least once, the game will screw you over at the worst possible times. Couple this with the harsh fall damage and I have been subject to multiple cheap deaths and a lot of lost EXP. This is the game play's strength.
On the other side of the coin there is the combat system. I do not like Dying Light's combat system. The game does not encourage combat with zombies, choosing to favour parkour. The result is that when you *have* to fight, you fight with melee weapons that feel either weak, fragile or both. For how rare guns are, they're pretty underwhelming in damage and variety. DLC weapons help but DLC weapons also grossly break the game (which ironically made it more fun for me). It does not help in any way that enemy AI, human and zombie are brain dead. The terrible AI works for the lesser zombies, but when you see more powerful zombies as well as human enemies act jankily or fail to understand the act of going through a doorway, it takes the challenge and fun out of combat. You will either exploit the AI or the damage balancing they're given as compensation will screw you over. The exception to the rule are Runner Virals, which do actually try to avoid your swings and shots, pursue you and generally actually feel like a threat.
The nighttime mechanics are novel, but with how little time I spent during the night (no I did not just bail to the nearest safe house and sleep), they weren't very prominent for me despite the famous "Goodnight, good luck" phrase used in the game's marketing.

What further complicates Dying Light as an open world zombie game for me is the number of other, better games in the zombie genre and the open world genre. The Resident Evil games have more threatening zombies and Left 4 Dead handles zombie hordes so much better. GTA IV, RDR2, Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring and even Skyrim are all better examples of open-world design in the story/character (GTA/Red Dead), setting (GTA/Red Dead/Elden Ring/Skyrim/BOTW), and gameplay sense (BOTW/Elden Ring). I do think Dying Light is the best game I've played that combines both open world and zombies but I've also not played Undead Nightmare. These games are arguably better choices for a zombie survival or open world experience. Dying Light is good fun with friends though, even with the game's painful flaws. I don't think I would have played through the game solo, whether that is a positive or negative regarding Dying Light I'm not sure.

Overall I did not enjoy Dying Light enough to consider a recommendation. If I could I'd give it a neutral score, there's definitely things the game does well and it is fun playing multiplayer, but the negatives definitely weigh it down enough for me to not have a great view of it. It's an okay game but I really don't understand what makes it special.
