With the new DLC around the corner I've started playing this game again. It definitely expands upon the traditional XCOM formula and makes it both more challenging and less frustrating for a lot of players. While I don't think this makes it necessarily better than XCOM (I think XCOM allows far deeper customization of playstyle), I think it does change enough to make it unique. Namely the #1 "cool" thing is the crit/body part destruction mechanic. I know that Phoenix Point also had this, but unlike phoenix point the universe/Intellectual property here is much more inviting and intriguing.

Overall, if you like turn based strategy games, give this one a shot: I'm sure with the DLC it will be even better!

I'll never understand people who buy turn based strategy games then proceed to complain that they didn't win the first time. It's all about planning and strategy. But, maybe it's because I'm part of a generation that actually played Final Fantasy Tactics so I'm used to it.

I'll even copy an excerpt from one of my favorite articles about FFT:
This is a big wake-up call that the game isn't going to play fair, and there isn't any good way to end the fight quickly.

This isn't call of duty. You can't just point your mouse and click, and call in tactical nukes. You have to us your brain here. Strategy games aren't for everyone. Roguelites aren't for everyone. But this game is the first roguelite in a LONG time that has fufilled that "itch". It has the level of replayability akin to FTL (After you've unlocked all the ship variants) or Slay the Spire (after unlocking all cards/relics).

If you are ok with most likely not winning on your first play through then give this game a shot because you'll get addicted quickly. (Hint: Don't use easy mode, the game was designed with a set difficulty and enabling any of the shortcut options in easy mode really does detract from the experience.)

Don't let the review score fool you: This game is definitely fun. Where it succeeds is in providing a challenge. If you're looking for a game easier than slay the spire then move on. This game is not for you. If you've played Slay the Spire... I encourage you to remember, that you probably didn't get to the 3rd or even 2nd act on your first playthrough. You aren't going to succeed off the bat. If you remember that and just learn from your failures, you'll enjoy this game much more. If your intention is to just complain until the game is played for you, then move on and don't buy this.

How it's different
In slay the spire, you have one hero. Once their health reaches 0 it's game over and you start over from the bottom. It's different from slay the spire in that each encounter your disciples start off with fresh health. Your "devil essence" is your health bar. Once that reaches 0, you lose. The disciples health bars are there to absorb hits in each battle. Once they are vulnerable to Health damage (HP) or Spirit damage (SP) (vulnerable=0) then any further damage subtracts directly from your devil essence.

How to succeed
Plan. Plan. Plan. I can't stress this enough. If you go into this thinking you'll even GET to the final boss of the first chapter on your first playthrough, you are fooling yourself. This is a whole new game with entirely different mechanics. You need to start your first few fights off with focusing on Terror. Do not go for skills or souls. Getting terror events and your terror gauge to level 2 as soon as possible is going to help you out far more than souls or skills will. The only exception is if you have a beneficial terror event that encourages you to gain more rewards from a regular fight. (Terror events on those will usually provide double skill or double souls bonuses if you choose that as your fight reward before starting).

How to build your starting team
  1. Based on the first few relics, skills, and traits you get...you'll need to figure out who your carry is. Bloody Mary is an easy starter carry since dracula's buffs with her mirror and multi-hit attacks will make short work of early encounters. However, don't be afraid to make Headless Horseman or Dracula a carry if you get lucky with an early relic or skill that makes them better. Your starting 3 heroes (drac, mary, headless) suffer from a lack of spirit damage. So you'll want to try to find either double damage skills (like Mary's "eeny, meeny, miny, moe" skill), or other spirit damage skills to help compensate and create a balanced approach.
  2. Stack traits and get a multi hit/multi target spell. In order to succeed you'll need skills that scale with your damage. Multi hit and multi target spells scale very well. Single target stuff should either have buffs/debuffs for your enemies, life-gain, or some other effect tied to it that benefits you. Things like "stabbing" (mary's default skill) are bad and should only be kept/used if you have no other options. Stack traits from events that improve your character with a good relic or skill. If none are offered, then stack traits that improve their health/spirit health. The last thing you want to worry about are social stats. Social stats are nice (they help you use less devil essence) but ultimately don't help you anywhere else except for social checks. They are the least priority.
  3. Speaking of Devil Essence. Don't be afraid to use it. In combat the only things you can use devil essence for are: Refreshing Abilities, manipulating health (yours or enemies) and stealing/getting rid of buffs/debuffs. Your primary use for devil essence in combat should be stealing beneficial buffs from your enemies, or manipulating your disciples health. I rarely use devil essence to deplete my opponents health. Also never use devil essence to refresh abilities. You should be scaling and planning out your turns in advance: use devil essence to manipulate the flow of combat: not manipulate stats directly. Outside of combat: the two best uses for devil essence are creating portals between two beneficial levels that aren't directly connected, and using essence to manipulate social events in your favor. You should honestly never really fail an event. (it has happened to me, but it's rare: You should never attempt a social check unless it's at 70% or higher. If you fail at that % range, then oh well.
  4. Lastly don't forget to try different team compositions. Once you hit level 2 on your devil level, you'll unlock the white lady. She may seem weak, but she has good spirit damage, and really decent debuffs.

Lastly: pros and cons of the first 4 disciples you'll use...

Dracula
Pros: Good buffs. Good damage when vulnerable with certain skills. Able to refresh entire teams skills for only 2 energy. Can manipulate energy with skills. Has 1 cost damage skill to start off with (which is better than you think!)
Cons: Hard to use with starting skills. Makes you think he needs to go full damage route.
Early game analysis: Useful as you get to know the game. Better used as a buff/debuffer than direct damage until other skill/relic/team compositions open up to you.

Headless Horseman
Pros: Really tanky. Like really tanky. Able to redirect attacks to him. Able to steal health back after absorbing attacks. Has some of the strongest multi-target skills early on (aka Burst of Anger). Able to debuff enemies pretty well too.
Cons: Skills are expensive and often clunky to use. You'll need cost reduction stuff, or relics that give you more energy to do well with him.
Early game analysis: Great tank until you unlock Lillith. Tip: Try to get the skill that self-damages himself. It gives him stacks of bitterness but increases his max hp (at the cost of current hp) and lets you manipulate your stacks of bitterness easier and thus use his lifesteal skill more often.

Bloody Mary
Pros: Really strong combo character. Able to easily go physical or spiritual damage based on the relics/skills/traits you get. Can often hybrid and go both. Consider sacrificing stabbing at an altar early on, to give her more skill slots and open up hybrid damage on her for utility. Will be your early game carry until other characters unlock.
Cons: Slightly expensive skills, Relies on mirror to be good. (Hint: This means you should 100% pick up the "pocket mirror" relic if it's offered to you.) If you don't manage/plan your mirror well she's bad because her mirror is also her recharge skill, which costs 2)
Early game analysis: Sacrifice stabbing at an altar. Get Pocket Mirror relic if offered to you. Try to scale her physical damage up with traits, or get "eeny, meeny, miney, moe". She also has some SERIOUSLY devastating multi-hit/multi-target spiritual damage skills that once you get the hang of her, I think are better for her to scale with.

White Lady
Pros: Strong debuffs. Masks are effectively "passive" effects once used, so she can contribute damage over multiple turns, while still manipulating enemies with control skills. Strong spirit damage skills.
Cons: lacks any real physical damage. Hard to build with any other way other than pure spirit damage. Not a ton of life-regain options.
Early game analysis: I replaced Dracula with White Lady but ultimately I don't think one is better than the other. White lady does give you early spirit damage which the initial team comp is lacking, so take it for what it's worth: either option will do ok, but I slightly preferred white lady over dracula.

Overall: The game is great and challenging. My only suggestions/feedback for the developer are this:
* Grammar/spelling errors on skills/boxes need to be resolved.
* Eventually game needs a mode that allows procedural generation or some sort of "infinite" mode.
* Once you hit level 4 terror, there's no additional skill bonuses? Seems odd.

This wonderful game, while I think it has seen better days should at least be played by as many people as possible at some point in their life.

The merged genres of FPS/RTS perfectly meld into seemless strategy and action.

If you're thinking of nominating this for a category do this for the custom category in steam of "We didn't think of everything" and put the new category as "The lost but not forgotten" award. This game, while it has passed its prime, should definitely not be forgotten.

XCOM2 is an extremely addictive turn based game that picks up the pieces where XCOM: Enemy Within left off. The turn based style game combined with both squad loadout and base building aspects combine to create a game where the sum of the components is greater than the individual parts.

The crowning achievment of this game over it's predecessor is the fact that it has integrated mod capability which makes it far more likely to survive for a lengthy period of time. Despite the fact that I feel the artistic direction went in the opposite way I wanted to see it go (I preferred the slightly unrealistic/cartoony models they had in EW) it's still a beautiful game.

The storyline is kind of expected with very little in the way of twists, but the progression is paced enough that you don't feel to rushed, while still providing a level of urgency that doesn't let you get too complacent.

The base building aspect is a little lacking (Labratories are still bad Firaxis, please learn from your mistakes and make them useful!) overall it still requires a level of forethought, planning, and resource management to get it to come together in a timely manner.

The best part of the game, creating and editing your squad skills/loadouts is by far the best place to let your own playstyle come through. Like blowing stuff up? Well suit up, get yourself some grenadiers and come on down! Want to pop some heads? Sharpshooters will ease that trigger finger and allow you to execute some perfect ambushes.

Overall, the game's mod capability has allowed me to enjoy some additional aesthetics and some increased balance while still keeping the game in the general area of the developers vision. I would recommend this to anyone who has any desire to play a turn based game, not getting this would be a travesty.

If you like losing 90% of the time then this game is for you. I've played 4v1 survival games, a great example of one (that just got poor marketing due to cosmetic day one DLC) is Evolve. Evolve shines where Dead by Daylight fails.

As a survivor you have to deal with (at this point in time) 1 of 3 killers. The main mechanic to evading killers is awareness (seeing the killer) and your senses telling you the killer is near via a heartbeat sound. However, one of the killers completely circumvents this mechanic.

I'm sorry, a CORE mechanic to your game and everyone is honestly surprised that everyone is picking the Wraith? How droll. And for anyone saying "well I've won X games as hillbilly" or "I've evaded the wrath plenty of times" Guess what, a good wraith is going to be far enough away from a particular spot (not moving) and unless you have the eyesight of a raven, you aren't going to spot him in time to run away.

As the survivor it's an extremely frustrating experience being unable to see your fellow survivors unless they are in mortal peril. It's also very frustrating having NO communication ability whatsoever.

I hope Friday the 13th does this time of horror survival genre better. Either way I don't care what people think about my review. My opinion and review of this game is that it's bad. So bad that I'm getting a refund for it.

This game is one of the few decent Early Access games worth purchasing. If you have ever played any of Unknown Worlds games (NS1, NS2) you know that they deliver high quality games. For Subnautica, I was skeptical at first; but was surprised at how beautiful the game was for an Early Access game. The sound/music is enriching and immersive, and the graphics, while a little 'blocky' for now are still quite beautiful.

The game has a intricate and layered building system that I expect to continue to expand. Building things requires time investments but you generally don't have too hard of a time finding the materials you need, it's more a matter of finding space to store stuff. (Hint: build a small seafloor base first with a locker, don't waste materials on storage cubes)

The core concept of the game is there, while the game is largely unfinished and does not have a lot to do at the moment; I expect this will change in the near future as they continue expanding and developing the game.

Also, the base building component is very intiuitive and yet highly customizable and they haven't even added "fun" things in the game yet for bases. I can't even fathom how much time I'll waste making the perfect "SeaLab" once they add modular rooms, and vanity/fun items.

All-in-All; buy this game. You won't be dissapointed and for $20 it's worth the cost; and you'll be supporting a developer who will hopefully grow and be able to put out more high quality games in the future! What Frozenbyte is to side scrollers/puzzles; Unknown Worlds is to FPS games. They are small, but highly skilled teams that know exactly how to deliver an awesome product.

The single player in this game is actually quite fun. If you enjoy the Alien franchise this is worth buying while it's on sale. The multiplayer can be frustrating at times but is actually balanced to a lesser extent.

The downfall of this game (as someone who bought it when it originally released) is that the multiplaer was at it's launch player based, and as many are aware on PC games...not having dedicated servers can be quite the problem.

If you want to play multiplayer look in the player matches (I'm not sure many people play Ranked anymore, but who knows if this is on sale maybe a bunch of new people may queue up for it).

The different modes are fun (Infestation and Predator Hunt are probably my favorites for multiplayer). And a few dedicated servers exist. Overall buy the game for the singleplayer and if you're lucky this will fill your shooter "itch" until Evolve releases in 2015.

I bought this hoping it would kinda be like Pirates of the Burning Sea...except without the PvP camping. Or maybe something similar to a cross between Sid Meirs Pirates and POTBS.

Turns out I was wrong. Strange how there are few GOOD pirate games these days. Oh well, maybe next game cycle around...
