I rarely like horror games, not for their concept and execution, I'm just a ♥♥♥♥♥. This game was so beautiful and immersive that I was willing to sweat onto my keyboard and ♥♥♥♥ myself so that I could experience it.

I bought this game back in 2017 when it was on sale for $4, and at the time of writing this, it is on sale for $4 once again. I bought it because of the raving reviews but allowed it to collect dust in my library after booting it up and thinking it wasn't the right game for me.

About a year back when I got COVID-19 I played the ever-loving ♥♥♥♥ out of Frostpunk, and fell in love with 11 Bit Studios. After I couldn't get enough, I came back to This War of Mine, and I am extremely happy I did.

On my first several tries I treated the game for what I thought it was: a sacrifice-all kill-everything survival game. Instead what I got was an incredible, dark and gritty story seamlessly intertwined with minimalist yet extremely rewarding mechanics. In my 5th and successful run, I had an extremely comfortable playthrough (challenge wise) once I got past certain hurdles, yet it didn't feel like the game no longer had anything to offer me, just that I had been rewarded for smart tactics.

Does the game have a few bugs here and there? Sure.
Did I have to Alt+F4 a few times because I lost a character to clunky combat? Of course.

But I was never discouraged. This game has the beautiful incentive of perseverance, and the need to help your survivors reach the end of the unjust, unfair hell they find themselves in.

I am ecstatic to play the DLC for this game, and I am extremely excited for Frostpunk 2, Alters, and all of the other games 11 Bit Studios is cooking up. All in all, give this game a shot. A real shot. No matter what your first impression is.

Also, it is rewarding to infiltrate an entire outpost of soldiers and wipe them out like an extremely normal, mundane Solid Snake.

This game absolutley blew my mind by letting me blow up everyone elses.
