an insane melting pot of game inspirations seasoned with a good dollop of grimy scifi charm, an explosive cultural cocktail with a taste that is equal parts nostalgic and refreshingly new. "Fortune's Run - a video game".

from an FPS standpoint (and this is advertised as an FPS first and foremost), fortune's run is fast, loud, and will absolutely kick your ass. fret not, for the game has some of the most customizable difficulty options in a shooter and a quickload mechanic so beautifully presented you'll want to press F9 just to see it again. seriously though, you'll be pressing that a lot. while a retro shooter and im-sim at heart, the combat of fortune's run on higher difficulties channels the spirit of hotline miami with all of its frantic improv and countless retries. each encounter presents a challenge of its own and you'll need to experiment a good deal to make it out alive.

if, for whatever reason, greeting everyone you come across with a boot to the head and a double serving of buckshot isn't your thing (sorry but you'll still have to! sometimes), you can ninja your way through a good chunk of the arenas with grace thanks to the thief-like light meter, mgs-like minimap, and movement that i can only describe as a mixture of quake and titanfall and maybe a little bit of crack.

and i didn't even get into the intricate hand-to-hand combat system, the whole "parrying bullets with your blade" thing, the souls-esque player messages, the kickass bosses, the plot, *the music*...

even with the occasional bugs and at a fraction of its projected scope, this is - without a doubt - a gem of a videogame, and it's being cut into something brilliant right here and now. if you really care about this scene and the talented teams like this one risking everything to break the retro shooter mold then you'd better check this thing out. it's a fresh, uncompromising experience, and while it may not be for everyone, you won't know that until you try it for yourself.
