Fun game but its almost paid abandonware at this point.

Last update posted on the official website was in 2021, last release notes on the official website were in 2018 - but the Dev is still active on discord as of July 2024 and he seems hopeful that some new updates will be rolling out soon. So its possible the website is just inaccurate or not regularly updated.

Even despite that it's still a very fun game and I'd recommend trying it - just be aware that its only 2 players, you'll have a hard time convincing anyone to play with you at its current price, and I've never once seen it go on sale.

At least for now, with all things considered I kinda have to give it a thumbs down, even though its current state its still very fun. If anything changes and a new update rolls out, I'll update the review.

Fantastic DLC. Overall I'd give it a 8.8/10 but it does have some issues, and some are worse than others.
I went in 100% blind and only looked at community resources and content once I had finished as much as I could.

- Great music, not offensive but definitely nothing groundbreaking. 8/10

- Jaw-dropping visuals and art-style 10/10

- Engaging and deep combat, you can try basically limitless build combinations, but you're still a bit limited by Larval Tears & Smithing Stone 10s having artificial scarcity. 8/10

- Difficulty is a nice challenge, and rewarding when you get into a flow with bosses. Its almost never unfair... Almost. (looking at your Mr Consort.) 9/10

- Camera issues still not fixed from base game 3/10

- Worldbuilding and Lore 9/10

- Boss Design 10/10

- Frame drops and performance issues 7/10. For me they didn't happen often but I've definitely had micro-stutters that got me killed.

- Audio stuttering 1/10, cutscene audio and boss music continuously drops out and stutters and its just unacceptable, like listening to a CD that is skipping. I ended up just turning off the music a quarter of the way through because it was jarring to listen to when it kept cutting out.

- Blessing system is fun and rewarding at first, but can be a bit annoying later on trying to find the last few that you might have missed. 8/10

- Optional regions being locked behind exploration can be fun and rewarding, but in the case of lower Rauh, it took me over 10 hours to figure out how to reach the area, and its the only way to acquire the map for the region above it. It made me wish there was more than one way to reach that area. 7/10

It would be a high 9 or 10 overall but the last boss is a massive let down as far as narrative, has some frustrating visibility issues, performance issues for many players, and has an ability that CANNOT be avoided and is essentially guaranteed damage as long as you are playing a melee build.

!!Spoiler warning!!
Fun survival game. If you ever wanted to survive in the forest like a hunter gatherer, this is your game. This is the main core of the game in my opinion, and it does that part well. Its fun to build settlements with your friends and being a lumberjack has never felt so satisfying.
Just do yourself a favour and don't play it for the story. Its uninspired and unimaginative. Characters have literally no development, they just appear out of nowhere and then disappear or die without so much as an introduction. Some characters spend the entire game helping you, just to be forgotten by the plot later on. Remember Virginia? The girl who brings you berries and fish. Yeah she has no character arc whatsoever. You can either leave the island or stay but as far as I could tell it has absolutely no effect on her story.
I don't remember her ever being mentioned or getting a cutscene in the close of the game.

The one positive part of the story in my opinion is they take the Fromsoftware approach of "show, don't tell", most of the lore and explanations are hidden in collectables and aren't shoved down your throat, but the positives end there. There's no dialogue whatsoever, and the story has basically nothing to do with the game-play. For example, nothing you learn or discover during the main gameplay loop is really necessary to beat the game with I think one exception (the shovel, I think?). The game teaches you to forage and gather food, build fire & shelters, fight off hordes of nudists, go spelunking & ziplining, and fight with all different types of weaponry. But to progress the story you just collect pieces of paper and travel. Its basically like two entirely different games being played at the same time.
The story could have taken place on another planet, an abandoned city, a farm, or a desert - and it would have made absolutely no difference to how it plays out. It just so happens that the story takes place in a forest so I guess you have to survive in a forest. Nobody that I played with or that I know who played it had any idea what was going on.

Its a shame too because its one of the better survival craft games out there. I just wish they put more effort into the survival part of the game, maybe with better hunting & foraging mechanics etc, or even bug-testing (yeah, its early access, I know).
As it stands, its an above average survival craft with a terrible plot. 7/10

First off I'd highly recommend going into this game blind. Just know the review is mostly positive, and there may be some mild !SPOILERS! so if you choose to continue reading it, consider yourself warned.

Alkurai is an above average game with a lot of potential, as it takes a great and pretty unique approach to co-op horror. Its currently quite short and you can beat it in just a couple of hours with a couple of players, but this is expected as its still in early access.

Alkurai draws a lot of inspiration from popular games in the genre such as Dark Souls, & Labyrinthine, and it executes its ideas well! The level design is well thought out and deliberate, there are lots of shortcuts and the quests and puzzles are complex enough to challenge you without feeling overly cryptic, and the monsters are frightening, challenging to beat, but fair.
The quests are fun and fit the environment well. They are a welcome RPG element in a co-op horror game, something you don't see done often - if at all. All quest dialogs have full voice acting and for a relatively cheap early access game, its actually really well acted and written. Alkurai has a quest log, but the game doesn't hold your hand at all or use a map or mini-map to tell you where to go. Its also not very linear in its design, for the most part you can accomplish your objectives in any order you wish. You're left to your own devices and you don't know your main objective until later in the game which is great for suspense. The devs respect the intelligence of the player and let you figure things out on your own.

The monsters are decent as mentioned before, with the main baddie being an incredible addition. She's inspired by a certain beloved boss from a popular 2011 game with a unique twist that fits the artistic design of the world very well. She's unique and easily my favourite enemy from any co-op horror game I've ever played.

One area that is lacking is replay value. Its still early on in development so its hard to comment on, but it has to be said that as with a lot of story driven & puzzle games, you can only really experience them once.

As far as the horror, I think it nails a few of the things that make a good horror game:
- Areas that isolate you from the group,
- You feel defenceless. You cannot fight back, you must run or hide
- Creepy monsters and areas without feeling over the top or cliche.
- It doesn't rely on cheap jumpscares, in fact there are very few of them (I think 2?) and they are quite mild compared to the average horror game. No extreme loud eardrum breaking noises.
- The sound design is okay, nothing that stood out in a negative way. Could be better but definitely above average.

All in all, its a good pick-up, I'd say its worth the money. I'm definitely looking forward to more updates!

This game is superrrrrr fun. It has a very unique story, some fun puzzles, its challenging but more or less fair. And through the cosmetic system and procedural generation maps - it ends up having lots of replayability.

Also the community is fantastic!

Edited: In November 2023, all of this remains true, and the devs are continuously adding great and engaging new content. Still highly recommended to try this if you're a fan of horror

Great game, great story, great graphics. 10/10 would recommend. Had a ton of fun playing and had some friends watching and we'd discuss the different dialogue choices.

Amazing game!!! 10/10
Its got a lot of replay value, and the community is A1; very few toxic players, and I've made a lot of great friends along the way.
Definitely recommend doing traits challenges as well once you've got the hang of the game.

I loved this game a lot, maybe its just because of my imagination but for people who are into history and micro management, this is your game.
