Love this game and have spent hours upon hours playing it deeply ingrained. Mechanics and game play are smooth. Sandbox is my wheelhouse. However, the developers were douches and remove it off steam at the start after paying for it and made it very difficult to get the release DLC if you were a steam player.

Pros: Game is fantastic
Cons: Developers are douches

This game has had a rocky start. I can only guess the publisher pushed for the release date before Christmas or similar. However, it wasn't ready when they launched it at all and the developer even said it was really sluggish performance wise. I fell this has hurt the game massively. They are pushing updates every day and bug fixing which is great. I just wish they would of done this before launching. The lack of mods at launch isn't great either. And there is basically quality of life items not available at launch. I get the feeling they are going to nickle and dime all the quality of life stuff as paid DLC which if is the case will ruin the game and kill the user base in my opinion. It has a long way to go before I would consider playing. Its just too laggy and missing basic functionality.

This game goes through peaks and troughs. I love to play this with friends. You can absolutely play this solo but its better with friends every time. Its been in Alpha for years and they are making constant progress updates. It doesn't feel buggy like it used to many years ago and the visuals of the game have improved greatly over the years. It is well worth the cash to play. Would recommend!

With over 600 games in my collection this is hands down the best game I have ever played. Engineering dream.

Update: Years later and nearly 3000 hours in. This review is still as true as it was. Simply the best game on Steam.

Update 3: So the new Space Age expansion has released and you know they added just about every quality of life enhancement you could imagine into this expansion. I love this game. Just a shame they wont be doing any more expansions.

If you are a fan of minecraft and Kerbal Space Program, this game might be for you. It is an interesting mix of crafting, and combat that differentiates itself fairly well right now through it's unique crafting system.

Like minecraft, you gather resources then refine them into the base parts you need, however in space engineers there is another step that makes all the difference. To build a block of any type you must first place down scaffolding, giving spacecraft and ships a very industrial, mechanical feel while in production. From there you must weld it together, gradually assembling the block desired. While this may seem like a small change, it makes a world of difference. Quick repairs are neigh impossible, and under threat of asteroids in survival it makes for a very harrowing experience. The combat should be praised as it is not health bar based, instead it is a more realistic damage system focusing on the components of ships rather than the ship as a whole meaning that spacecraft dogfights are won through damaging key components, and smart fighting. It should also be mentioned that this game has a fully featured destruction system that is fairly impressive, capable of warping blocks drastically.

Overall, a title to watch for, but I can only recommend it to people who are very sure they will like it as it is lacking variety in its block selection. As of now most of the parts are for spacecraft only, and I hope to see more emerge for base building.
