If you're new to visual novels or wary of too many anime-isms, consider Doki Doki Literature club. It's free. At worst it costs you a few hours. At best, you're in for a unique experience. It's a decent way to try the genre for those that are new to it and a nice twist for those who are more familiar. There's more here than the more-blob exterior shows.
