Civ is easy to learn, easy to play, and pretty basic overall. It's good if 4x Games aren't your thing but you want to check them out, or if you're just a more laid back player, although it has quite a few shortcomings. The AI is essentially brain dead. There is next to no point in taking a diplomatic approach, because everything will always boil down into war, unless you have Brave New World. Speaking of which the DLC is way overpriced in my opinion, for what you're getting. Without them you're better off massing an army and just going for conquest every single game.

The game does have some nifty innovations as well, with strategic resources now being limited and production of decent units becoming more of a challenge. The later expansions also have some cool 'fun' units, such as being able to build and deploy X-com squads (An Alien invasion mini-mod or expansion would be awesome. :P). If you're looking for it to be a well-rounded 4x game though Brave New World is a must.

Ultimately this game reminded me more of Civilization Revolution, and less of a continuation in the actual civilization series. It's mildly entertaining by itself, but really shines when you play with a mix of friends and AI. Unlike previous Civ titles, this game shines in multiplayer moreso than singleplayer, so unless you know people who own this too, you might want to pass it up.
