A lot of the hate this game receives is a bit short-sighted in my opinion. The main character is actually written rather realistically, but if you don't see the story through to the end, I can understand how it's tempting to bash it for not conforming to the same type of character arc as you expect from other stories. I think most of those nay-sayers would appreciate it more after playing the whole way through and/or having experiences with real people who have been through situations similar to Frey's. Some may find issue with "excessive" profanity, but in my opinion 1) it's just words and 2) it's more authentic as it is. My biggest complaint about the writing is the repetitive idle dialogue, but you can learn to tune that out and just focus on the gameplay.

The gameplay itself is pretty unique and enjoyable. I don't play enough AAA games to compare, but I really liked the graphics/aesthetics. The world borders on too big, especially if you're going everywhere to do all the things, but it's not truly empty; there's always something you can find on the way to the next objective if you're keeping an eye out. Completing all the overworld side quest things gets tedious over time, though. Having full cleared most areas as I was able during the first run, I would recommend focusing on more high-value detours (dungeons, for example) and leaving less rewarding things for post-game, if ever.

Overall, I rather enjoyed the game. I personally almost never actually buy AAA games at release price, so I won't say go out and buy it now, but I think it's worth picking up on sale if you're at all interested in this type of game.

Oh, and P.S. Don't bother with the game if you don't like cats.
