Poor writing and bland story leave Perception lacking in comparison to other indie-horror titles like Soma.

The sole distinguishing factor—a blind protagonist—is ultimately a gimmick, with little meaningful integration with the mechanics or themes.

Excellent low-level mechanics (movement, shooting, sound design), boring high-level mechanics (bloated RPG systems, dumb bullet-sponge AI, endless grind), but overall a worthwhile package for most shooter fans.
My reasons for giving a negative review, though, have only gotten worse over Destiny's lifespan; namely that...

1. many aspects of the game's design are fundamentally compromised by its business model, and
2. Bungie don't seem to have the interest or ability to adequately police cheating in PVP beyond litigation

On the first count, you have the various ways to buy into this game. Originally, you just bought the base game, and if you liked it, you bought the expansions until either you stopped wanting to buy more or Bungie stopped making them. At the end of it, you could come back years later and still enjoy whatever parts of the game you paid for (presumably until their servers went offline).

Since Bungie jumped ship from Activision/Blizzard and relaunched the game on Steam, the base game is free (although very lean on meaningful playable content), and now you can buy...

1. The major yearly expansions
2. The season passes
3. The dungeons
4. Power level boosts (to shorten seasonal grind)
5. An ever-growing plethora of cosmetic doodads

The first problem is that this shift in focus toward generating ever more streams of revenue has amounted to most of the content design decisions now revolving around protracted player engagement rather than anything resembling an artistic or creative endeavour (i.e. they're less interested in making something that's cool and fun than something that will keep the whales coming back in perpetuity).

Worse still, this insistence on rapidly adding a high volume of content has meant that a lot of the base campaign content, patrol areas and a few PVP maps -- all of which I've paid Bungie for -- were removed from the game without any prior indication that this might happen when I bought it (which, according to what I understand of Australian consumer law and guarantees, is probably something that would warrant a full refund).

Then there's the cheating in PVP.

Going "F2P" also means there's no longer a cost barrier for cheaters (besides whatever they pay for the cheat software itself). Banned? Just start another account and jump right back in.

While Bungie have filed and won dozens of multi-million dollar lawsuits against the creators of various pieces of cheat software, their interest in litigation seems to hew more to a concern about the effect cheat-makers have on their bottom line than a concern about the effect that cheat-users have on the playerbase.

Unlike similarly popular titles with a PVP component, Bungie have almost zero transparency regarding the cheating situation. They'll occasionally talk about it in the abstract through community channels, and express their ongoing dedication to tracking the problem, but they never actually provide any meaningful insight into the situation as a whole... but I think I know why;
of the dozens of cheat makers they've successfully sued, most of them had thousands of accounts tied directly to Destiny (which Bungie themselves have described as very low estimates of the actual number of paying cheaters, given that not every cheat software customer will be dumb enough to use information on cheat sites that's identical to their Bungie accounts).

Destiny's average weekly player numbers generally hover around 100k according to Steamcharts, with many (if not most) of those people playing PVE, meaning that it's probably not an exaggeration to estimate that a significant portion of Destiny's PVP population are always cheating -- even with Bungie's implementation of Easy Anti-cheat in place.

In short, I'm pretty sure the reason why they're hesitant to talk numbers in any real depth or detail is because all it would do is serve as terrible advertising for any prospective new players who want to come primarily for the game's PVP (and aren't total pieces of shıt).

Take it from someone who's spent way too much time playing this game: if you're looking to try it out, go right ahead -- there's some cool ♥♥♥♥ in here once you get past all of the confusing gaps left behind by the stuff they've removed from the game over the years -- but if you're thinking of buying into it, don't.

There's other stuff more worthy of your money out there, and there are probably better things you could be playing with your friends anyway.

The gummy controls and stiff combat hold back what might otherwise be a decent rogue-lite co-op 'Souls-wannabe.

Necropolis' art direction stands out as the only thing it really gets right, and with a price that's twice what it should be, it's hard to recommend.

Absolver is like a weird blend between the combat from For Honor, the hub-world of Dark Souls, and the visual style of something like Rime or Destiny.

The combat and character avatar allow for surprisingly deep customisation, but the balance of the combat system clearly takes a back seat to fun, with some fighting styles and abilities being hands-down more useful than others.

The core concept of having totally customisable attack chains means that mix-up (something that fighting games normally require players to master) is now totally offloaded to the game itself, leading to fights often being extremely chaotic and unpredictable, but if you don't mind playing solo (or playing with a small group of friends) this issue isn't really a problem.

Besides, as it stands, that is really the only way you'll be able to play Absolver now, as server populations are surely within single digits, with most of your time exploring feeling a bit like you've stumbled into a ghost town.

Still, it's a hell of a lot of fun if you can take it for what it is, and is a truly impressive technical achievement, especially for an indie title.

Guerrilla is a tech demo masquerading as a game.

The destruction is technically impressive, but lacks any real effect in terms of tactics or lasting impact, and the game's writing, art direction and high-level design are all very tired and very generic.

Full of synth, neon and 80's pop-culture references, it's hard not to at least smirk while playing Blood Dragon.

If you've played a Ubisoft game, you know what to expect; it's stiff by today's standards, but it gets the job done, and doesn't overstay its welcome.

Packed with ideas, but overshadowed by lackluster production—Mars War Logs might have fared better if the devs had set their sights on something more modest.

It's a middle-market attempt at Mass Effect, and it feels like it; it's rough, but not without merit.

Sniper Elite's mechanics never quite gel, and encounters regularly devolve into shooting galleries due to a few odd choices with the game's AI.

That said, shooting off a Nazi's balls in slow-mo doesn't exactly need a hard-sell, even if the game is a bit janky.

If GTA is 10km wide and 1km deep, Mankind Divided is 1km wide and 10km deep.

While it still pales in comparison to the original, the sheer amount of detail in the game world is really impressive.

While there was a lot of talk about the game "not having an ending" during it's release, it became apparent to me that the real issue was that Mankind Divided had painted it's narrative into a corner by setting Human Revolution before the original Deus Ex.

The story has a difinitive conclusion. Without going into spoilers, what the story lacks is a conclusion to the overarching story that connects this game to the original game -- but how could it? If any of the key players from Deus Ex that appear here were to be killed off, it'd only serve to constitute a massive continuity error.

As such, the events that play out over the course of the game (including how they conclude) feel very disconnected from the big-picture stuff that's tying everything together. While that might be disappointing for some, as someone who already knew these things going in, it really wasn't an issue.

In short, it's a servicable story, but it's elevated by its great art direction and open-ended game design.

If you like BioShock or Dishonored, you'll probably dig this.

A half-decent mobile game, clumsily ported to PC.

The Fall bears all the ugly hallmarks of its original format; poor production, gummy controls, stupid AI, wonky UI.

While it might be good as far as mobile gaming is concerned, it just doesn't pass muster on PC.
