its extremely 7/10. possibly the most 7/10 game a 7/10 game has ever been. it mostly sits at a good baseline and never attempts to reach up.

the music in the rhythm game sections is pretty weak. there's an obscene level of padding at times (see the entire breaking into the mall sequence, seriously why did i need to talk to and wait for everyone to walk to the door at their molasses pace TWICE to open it up, its so dumb. this is only one example of like 30+ similar moments throughout).

but the story is pretty engaging, and at times the combat does feel fun. there are plenty of cool moments and set pieces to make this game worth your time (but not the turn based pacifica fight. that felt horribly out of place and just kinda bad in general)

another thing to note; a decent chunk of the things you hear about this game online is straight up incorrect. you discover that quickly by, get this, playing the game! wow!

overall, its fine. 7/10 fine, which just falls into the recommended basket for me.

Its 7pm on a tuesday night, and you finally return home from your soul crushing 9-5 desk job.

You shouldve been home 1.5 hours ago, but 2 cars decided to play chicken right in the middle of the highway, and everyone is stopped at least 5 miles back.

Stumbling into the house, keys in the bowl, and jacket on the dining room table, you walk over to your desk, energyless and with a sore back.

You turn your computer on. As it beeps and the fans humm into life, you see that glorious thumbnail on the desktop. Microsoft Flight Simulator.

You grab that thrustmaster HOTAS meant for the PS4, but ♥♥♥♥ it, it was on sale for cheap, and of course it would work in this game.

Hours go by, as do all your worries in the world. The in-game sunset while flying over the pacific ocean brings out a happiness you havent felt in years, and you say...

yeah its pretty good i guess

The 'Splatoon' of city builders; Little content on release, promised content to come.

Kingdoms and Castles is a very promising 'city' (more like kingdom) builder. It offers a fun experience with plenty of strategic elements to make any Cities Skylines or Age of Empires player happy.

However... As of this review, There is no end game.

You build your kingdom on a relatively small map, without the option to expand the world itself. The first 1.5 - 2 hours on a savegame is the most entertaining, with plenty of expansion to do, and thats it. Not much else after that.

This game has a very obvious 'Early Access' vibe, despite not being in early access. Luckily, updates are somewhat regular, and they include larger parts of the experience. It is truely an 'Update to Update' game in its current form.

A simple Scenario system would make this game vasty more enjoyable. For example;
The previous king was beheaded for completely run the kindgom into the ground, with half the housing and services burnt to the ground, and most farms and mines have become completely abandoned. The player then has a timelimit to return the kingdom to its original thriving state.
Scenarios like this would heavily increase playtime and overall enjoyment with the game.

Here is a list of content/changes that the game desperately needs to finish its experience (imo);
  • Larger maps, or the ability to create a second city in the same kingdom
  • Price rebalancing. Piers are (imo) way too expensive. Same with aqueducts.
  • Scenarios. See above.
  • Some sort of campaign/story. How about reclaiming your kingdom from enemy forces, over multiple hours of gameplay?
  • More town buildings. You can only have so many wells, taverns and bakeries.
  • AI players or multiplayer. Both teams are settling on the same island. Deathmatch? Economic Victories? Happiness Victories?

tldr; Needs updates to complete the experience. As of this review, get the game on sale.

Event[0] is strange. On one hand, the visual and sound design is excellent. On the other hand, some story elements aren;t conveyed properly, and can only be found looking at logs on the terminals, which i came across as a guess command in kaizen's terminal. Its a very short game at 2-3 hours and it just runs horribly.

I would recommend it if it was on sale, and you wanted to experience something diffferent. Wouldn't recommend it for much else.

Early Access Review
Every hour I find a tiny inefiicency, I end up dismantling the entire operation. This game is very gripping.

Sonic Adventure DX for PC is just so, amazingly... ok. It just trys to be something absolutly huge for the franchise, mixing dramatic storytelling with the rush of Sonic gameplay, and yeah, at the time and on the right hardware, this was revolutionary. Its just plain awful today.

The advancements in PC gaming make the attempts for story telling, and the technology used for this effect just laughable. Seriously, the developers of the PC version must have LOW expectations. Your first playthrough of this game (all campaigns) will be memorable for years to come, but not in a good way. Why?

Because this PC port is complete ass. Missing button presses was a frequent problem through my experience, no matter how many different keyboards and computers I played on. (tested on 5, btw) For example, During the final boss fight of Amy's campaign, during phase 3, I game-overed 3 times from full lives because of the missed presses. In the fight, you have to jump over an obstacle. In my experience, Amy jumped probably 3/4 of the time. Eventually I got so badly pissed off at the game, I borrowed a second USB keyboard just to double my button presses.

This problem was only present in the Boss fights. There is literally no reason for this.

Why do I say thats its OK then? Well, Sonic Adventure DX is on the fence on being Good or Bad. The cornyness of the cinematics makes it funny and good, but only seconds later, a glitch where you are thrown uncontrolably off a stage by a pickup, losing a life and possibly game-overing you makes it bad. This effect (and unfortunatly glitch) happens frequently.

If you are curious, wait untill it's like $1 in a sale before you buy. Just the hours alone and ONLY the hours alone playing this game would justify that price. If you are on the fence, just don't.

Here's hoping Sonic Adventure 2 isn't this broken.

I spend $5 on a new indie game. Not 10 minute trash.
