Early Access Review

Time to update this review. If you want to view my old review, scroll down.

Well, it's been some time, and to be honest, a lot of what I said in my old review still stands. The game is still easy to learn but very deep and hard to master, there's still a card called Yak Attack (with the most amazing art) and the devs are still great with using feedback to upgrade their game.

Some things did change though. The UI got a massive overhaul (and looks seriously slick), all the cards got their proper art now (and it looks amazing), there's awesome cosmetics and there's also a great campaign with puzzles that will teach you the ins and outs of the game. Plus it's Free to play! (and in this case, it's a good thing, so let me talk about the model)

So the new F2P model did change a couple of things. Sadly, the ability to get the full collection for a set price is gone. Now it might return in some form later, but for now, you gotta buy the packs seperatly. However, you will get a lot of gold by playing games and doing the solo content. Plus everytime you open a pack, you can reroll the card with the highest rarity to get a different card of the same rarity (if you get two cards in a pack with the same rarity and both are the highest of the pack, you can choose which one to reroll). You gain gold everytime you win (which is kinda random on the amount you get, I believe it ranged from 10-80, though I could be wrong), and everytime you level you gain even more gold (and it's way easier to level now). There's even a chance you get something else from leveling. The 1000 gold per pack might seem expensive, but you can get to that point in no time (a daily quest ranges from 400-600 gold alone and can be done in 1-3 games, plus you can reroll them) And again, you get a lot of gold through just the solo-content alone. You can also use your RL money to get the packs, which is about €1,00 per pack (if you just buy a set of 250 gems. If you buy gem packs, you can get even more value out of it), and a pack contains 5 cards, where again you got the option to reroll one of the cards.

Finally, there's cosmetics, and the way they work is that you can buy Mythic Chests for 750 gems (around €3,00) those chests contain either Mythic cards (cards with a fancy border, they don't do anything special except having that shiny border. Too bad the cards don't become animated, but that costs a LOT of work), Avatars, Orbs, Wells, card backs or even special emotes. You gain 4 items per chest, and the chance of getting something other than mythic cards is really high. There's also Avatar sets that you can buy using gold or gems (though they are expensive gold wise, but worth it if you have gold to spare) and weekly deals on stuff inside of Mythic chests that you can buy through gold that week. Finally, you can also buy a Gold Digger that gives you big amounts of gold each day for a week.

Compared to other online card games, this game is still very fair to people who don't want to spend anything and I really recommend everyone who likes strategy card games to try this game out, as it is very unique compared to all the other card games out there and in my opinion way more fun and interesting. It's free anyways, and if you don't like it, then just stop playing, but at least give it a try. Also, have I mentioned yet how beautiful the artstyle of this game is? Seriously, it's one of the most, if not the most, prettiest card games out there.

So, all you really need to know about this game: It has a card called Yak Attack.

Ok, but in all seriousness, I have played many CCG/TCG's in my time, online and in RL. I've played Star Trek CCG, Magic the Gathering, LOTR TCG, Marvel vs DC Universe, Scrolls and Hearthstone, but Faeria is one of the games I've probably enjoyed the most (bar maybe Star Trek, but that was my first one, so)

It might look simple at a first glance, but the game is incredibly deep. You have to think about so many things, like "Where do I build my lands?" "Will I play this creature or save up for a bigger one next turn?" "Do I go for more land, or rather draw a card or gain an extra Faeria?" and much much more. Next to that, the game will be F2P after release, but in Early Access you get cosmetic swag (who doesn't like that) and 20 boosters + 10 arena tickets! Ofcourse if you don't like to pay for early access, I don't blame you, but the price of admission is well worth it.
And if you don't like grinding? Well, just put down 50 bucks extra and unlock all the cards! If you think that's a lot, just think how many boosters in Hearthstone or other card games you need to buy to get the full collection. Yes, overtime you will spend WAY more money on other online card games. Does this make the game P2W? Nope, as progression also goes faster than other games and someone who hasn't spent a dime except for the admission fee managed to get to the top rank.
Finally, the devs of this game have been very open and are constantly in touch with the community, listening to feedback and using that to improve the game. To give you an idea, most of the devs play this game as a F2P player to find out how the grind feels, and trust me, they also like to win, so if it's unbearable for you, it's probably also unbearable for them.

So there you have it. For the TLDR; Fantastic deep game, great consumer friendly business model and devs that truly listen to the community. Well worth the admission fee and more!
