It doesn't have save states as far as I can tell, I couldn't skip dialogue without repeatedly clicking my mouse, and that's not even going into how aggressive this thing is about selling you an anime Colonel Sanders dating sim. I cringed at every turn, and don't intend to ever continue entertaining this concept.

Don't give it the attention it wants. Even if it is free.

It's been a long, long time since I've played a good survival horror game. Subnautica does an excellent job of making you feel miniscule, out of your element, and as though you are at the mercy of a world far too vast/alien for you to understand. And yet, it gives you quite an amount of lore, witty dialogue, crushing despair, and never enough titanium.

If you like survival horror games at all, this is a REALLY solid play. Go in blind, if you can. Avoid the wiki as long as possible, but those first 24 hours? Go blind. You won't be able to experience it like you did the first time.

BIG RECOMMEND

IT ONLY GETS MORE INTENSE AND MORE NERVE-WRACKING

I REQUIRE ANSWERS, BUT I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE ANSWER CHAPTERS

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Once again, it starts very slowly, but once the plot finally kicks in, it is GRIPPING. I'm super excited to continue into Chapter 3.

Well written, charming, creative, and moving. Despite all the memes sprinkled about, none ever felt like they overstayed their welcome, and made the setting feel as though it could be serious and goofy at the same time.

I have a lot I could say, but I'm not feeling like typing it out. Maybe I'll edit in the future, but if you like Sci-fi, transhumanism, and Visual Novels, this is a MUST-PLAY.

One of the best party games you can invest in. Everyone has a smartphone and can join in, the only catch is if there's a lag between your stream of it and your twitch audience. Still worth it!!!

I like me a good horror VN, and this really did the trick. I heard good things about Higurashi from an acquaintance a long time ago, and after finally getting into it, I am HUGELY regretting not having got into it sooner.

It starts a little slow, setting the stage for the twists and mystery that takes place. You can see some of the tension coming, but once it hits, it hits hard. I highly recommend playing with headphones, not because there's voice acting, but because the music + sound effects are very fitting. Nothing stellar or super unique audio, but it made those tense moments actually made my blood go cold. Even though I knew one character's a yandere! I applaud that kinda handling of tension + release.

And this is only chapter 1! I'm now heavily invested in the series, and I only otherwise know 1 spoiler about what happens to 1 character in some other chapter. I have no idea what to expect, and I am starving for more.

I didn't come into this actually expecting to lose my cool and choke back a sob. I'm always a sucker for these.

The music box playing throughout much of the Main Story gets a little annoying, but it's not a real issue. The soundtrack fits the tone of the story really well. :)

I understand that this was very likely translated from Chinese. While some of the wording was awkward here and there, it was still good enough to make me actually sob! Twice! Fantastic job on the translation, especially regarding the Decode portion of the story! :D

It's short, sweet, and punches you right in the heart. If you like hella nostalgic stuff, this is an indulgence you might wanna consider.

I wanted to like this game, I really did. I still do. But after a little over an hour of play, I can tell that I'll just get upset at it. I'm playing with a PS4 Dualshock controller, and the jump between ranged/melee mode is always super sudden and my fingers get lost. I got as far as the 3rd fight, and from there I hit a wall. Because you don't actually dodge until you let go of X, you risk charging a dodge, and might overshoot into another bullet you hadn't accounted for. Managing that as well as the right joystick to fire bullets to whittle away the first healthbar of each boss's next phase made me feel really dumb.

I'm not great a bullet hell shooters, but I got through Nier:Automata just fine. Furi has uncomfortable/not-responsive-enough controls for my taste.

Still, god what a LOOK. The world's surreal and colorful and I want to know more. I'm definitely gonna go watch a playthrough, because I do wanna know what happens.

Preface
Veteran hunter, I've been around since MH3U, and have played all of the titles released since then, including the MHFU port to iOS. I say this because there are some comparisons between this game and previous gens that are necessary to properly critique this entry into the series.

I was super duper hype for Monster Hunter World, to the point that I play it both on PS4 and PC. I prefer it on PC since I get to have a little more control over it than I do on the PS4. Spoiler alert, I don't recommend it on PS4, but if you have more friends playing it on PS4, get it for PS4, it's still really good, and the stuff I say below still applies.

Gameplay
The real meat and potatoes of MonHun. Quality of life changes have been made out the wazoo; it's never been a better time to be introduced to the series. Gathering was streamlined, inventory space has been made far more spacious, and the armor skill system was simplified so that it's not a complicated mess. Combat is nuanced, to the point that you'll want to go and watch an Arrekz(?) Gaming or GaijinHunter video to properly understand your choice of weapon. The learning curve is high, but it's incredibly rewarding once you pick up on how things work. More in-game tutorials would be appreciated, but frankly it's still a huge step forward from what it previously was. 9/10

Story
You don't play Monster Hunter for the story- you hunt monsters. The Handler looks star-y eyed at pretty locales, won't let you skip cutscenes, and generally slows down the main gameplay loop. There's some INSANE lore if you go back and look into the official art books, and look at the landscapes of MH4U, but MHW doesn't really offer much. It takes place on a "New World", which is to say a big ol' island nobody's colonized or documented sufficiently. Don't expect to be captivated by anything new or unique. 1/10

Audio
There are some bumpin themes from across the series. These ones are good too. If you don't like the music, you can turn it off and just play something on Youtube in the background. 7/10

Graphics
The graphics of the previous games have all been compared to PS2-era graphics. This is an apt comparison. The graphics of MHW are a monumental step forward, with lots of attention and detail put into individual nooks and crannies of the world. The monsters are high-def, the views are spectacular, and the faces of all humanoid characters dip into the uncanny valley at a rate that makes me wish I could always hide my eyes. 8/10

Final Thoughts
The total playtime I've got for this series as a whole is somewhere in the 2500-3000 hour range. I've dunked maybe ~150 hours in total on MHW, with 100 of those on the PS4 version. I blame this disparity in time sinkage partly to the fact that previous titles were on 3DS or Switch, which are far more portable than my heavy-ass desktop computer. I also attribute the lack of hours this gen to the significantly low number of unique large monsters in this generation. The Monster Hunter dev team gets huge kudos for putting out such quality content that has me always coming back for more, but I'm more than willing to wait another year or few if more monsters get developed, tested, and churned out.

Monster Hunter World is a good game. I've enjoyed it, and I'm playing it some more to fully appreciate the last of the weapon types that I haven't solo'd my way to High Rank and beyond with. It's far from perfect, and there are some aspects of this entry that I feel lack the luster I've come to enjoy from previous titles. But it's something I always try to recommend others try, if only so I can do some hunting with them too.

I heartily recommend this game, and hope that the Iceborne expansion brings us some fresh-ass content.
