Early Access Review
The Long Dark is a totally unforgiving, brutally sadistic, gorgeously atmospheric experience, and is probably the only Early Access title I don't regret buying.

The "pastel painted cardboard" art style may not be to everyone's taste but there are so many times when the environment's beauty just astounds you and it's hard to resist taking some time to find the right angles for screenshots and footage. Until your balls freeze solid and a wolf promptly rips them off to use as ice cubes in a jug of your blood..

Every single playthrough of the Alpha's sandbox mode has been totally different thanks to random item placement. For instance sometimes I've found a rifle and only been able to find a few bullets for it. Other times I've had dozens of bullets and never found the rifle. Sometimes your diet consists of wet dog food and mouldy crackers. Sometimes you'll be lording it up on venison and fine fizzy drinks. Either way, you find ways to survive.

The sound design is top-notch too; it really hammers home the feeling of exposure.

At the moment in sandbox mode there's several different "regions" to explore, each a tangent of Northern Canadian life. Some of which used to be small transition zones between regions but are now so huge they are pretty much regions themselves!

I've not tried any of the challenges yet, such as surviving in different locations for a few days at a time, or avoiding being mauled by a bear that's hunting you down.

The currently in-development Story mode will be a nice cherry to finish off this snow cake!
