Selective mutism. Selective muteness is an anxious, emotionally driven mental disorder characterized by a permanent inability to communicate verbally or non-verbally in particular circumstances or with particular persons. It should be noted that these circumstances and persons are not deliberately or consciously chosen, but are caused by the disorder itself. The disorder begins in childhood. Selective mutism usually coexists with shyness or social phobia.
