Since I surprisingly found you guys like Romantic Interactive Films like crazy, ok, let’s do it again. This time, I’ve picked a real quality RIF with at least one completed route for you to watch.

I know you probably wanna ask: “What exactly do you mean by ‘quality RIF’ ?” Here’s the requirement: The story is humorous→The choices we make are logical→The flow of gameplay is smooth→Your overall watching experience are highly more enjoyable→Quality IF concluded. Enjoy your ride.

Side Note to Ladies’ School Prince Devs
All the actresses in the film did a fantastic job for their own roles, there isn’t much point to rate who is more a likable character in the survey in my opinion, lots of us simply appreciate them all.
In addition, I support the idea of maintaining the full cast for LSP 2 while everybody playing a different new protagonist, despite LSP2 isn’t going to be a sequel.

Square: the idea of having a semi early access 2 weeks ahead is terrible. I believe even the slowest gamer who has a full time job to attend to, should be able to finish 1&2 chapters within a week, which left most of us feeling suffocated under water for a week until Maxine’s grand return.
Unfortunately, Double Exposure is like the last guest of a party, everybody is waiting for her to arrive before the party can even get started, and she has to arrive two weeks later. It didn’t make her any special, it was backfired in reality.

Players: It’s not much to spill out for a story-driven game, you need to play it yourself to find out where the joy lies. All I can tell is: Double Exposure maintained at least the average quality of a LIS title should be, ‘average’ is an understatement for me to say, judging by the stories and interactions I have played across five chapters.
We all should have realised by now, the first LIS is a game too good to be true. Trying to surpass it, is a bit too much a challenge to overcome. But personally, I’d like to play more LIS games and see this franchise keeps going rather than stay in Arcadia Bay like forever. What Deck Nine has done is positive this time, they somehow managed to do something different still - even it’s a fifth different game by now. To me, it’s a job well done, no need to be picky to rate it down.

However, buy a standard edition is more than enough, I don’t see any reason to pay extra: semi - EA was a terrible idea; most extra content are too much to ask. Don’t we have too many other great games having to spend on? 2025 is pretty crazy, if you ask me.

Another awful RPG to complete for the sake of brought it with full price. I couldn’t let my hard earn money went to waste, this is the motivation that I haven’t abandoned this game, not the game is actually fun.

Again, game is an art form to interact with users, not a-one-sided input like movies. Designing a world with cute characters, monsters, environment with great voice acting, it’s what a cartoon would possibly make audiences like it, but hardly enough even to reach 50% the possibility to be a success in a video game. A better gameplay is required and far more important to accomplish the other half of the job which VoM has done terribly.

If you don’t even realized in battle, the camera angle should always facing your locked target rather than asking players busy adjusting it, why not make a turn based combat instead? Now these days, you can simply insert QTEs to make a turn based RPG still feeling intense to play, better than making a half barked action game who’s nowhere any good in terms of combat competing common great titles in the market that aren’t even difficult to see. My gut was telling me more than once, VoM would be a much better game if the combat were turn based. Focus on making the battles being strategic were more a wise choice rather than trying to believe you can copy the brilliant model that FF XVI has achieved. It’s using a short sword trying to slain a giant while ignoring magic is what your strongest attribute lies. The result isn’t hard to imagine.

The pace of game progression is also kinda of a problem. I believe, because of the clunky combat, sometimes, scenarios feel incredibly hard while fighting some certain enemies, then the next chapter, suddenly everything is too easy to acknowledge it’s the same game. This is what I meant ‘progression problem’. A good ARPG from what I’ve played, difficulties are suppose to match the progression of the story, not jumping up and down in every minute. This is not what you make players feeling exciting. In other words, the overall level designs are questionable.

The story so far, unfortunately is bad too. To avoid spoilers, let’ say, they kinda of telling your the ending in the very beginning of this game. So unless the story has a big turn over, the ending is doomed to be what it’s told. Devs made their story telling harder to be a terrific one by using this approach, not my place to judge, it’s their choices. And so far, I am in Ch.4, the story was nothing amazing but chaotic. Can’ t tell you the detail, but I honestly have no idea how the story gonna unfold amazingly afterwards. If the story also fails, VoM would be literally nothing to praise for, a title better skip at all cost. God, now I have to pray this doesn’t happen.

Sign...I see there are many staffs involving developing this game, are my own people. I don’t want sound too harsh on them. But Mana series is your own IP, Square. You should treat them with more care. Because the quality of this game in general so far will make me stop buying another one in the future. Full price is even more a fantasy in your dreams SE, I am sorry.

This game is no more than 10 USD, if you have to buy it no matter what. But If I were you who is deciding buy a new RPG to play, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is what you should look for and invest your money if you must, not this game. My statement above will sound more persuading if you have chance to play both games’ demos. Do not trust the statement saying ‘ the demo didn’t represent the game properly, the full game is better.’ Yes, it does. The impression of a demo leaves you, is what you get in the full game. I’ve learnt this the hard way.

Being honest, when I pre-purchased this game, I was skeptical. The game doesn’t landed on us cheap, moreover, by the modern standard of an incoming blockbuster, there is no demo available before launch. No matter which way I saw it, it was unprofessional at it’s best. A short demo provided by the developers could either dispel doubts in players’ mind, making them purchase the game with confidence or letting them know the product is not what they’ve expected, then they walk away from it without any regret. It’s the simplest and the most effective method for saving both parties' time. But SH 2 provides none, to be fair, most of big publishers these days will certainly do it with kind.
If not because Bloober Team showed us a long walkthrough footage about this game which looked promising, I would have missed this title by my own as well.

About the game
1
The first impression I walked into Silent Hill 2 is the perfect optimization they’ve done. The game runs excellently on my rig. 4K, HDR, Maximum graphic settings, you name it, all are done, not a single issue rises. I can’t play a game if it consistently crashes, stutters, freezes, stops loading, no matter how wonderful the game itself supposed to be, can I? SH2 got rid of all kinds of these worries I had since I started descending into this foggy town.

2
Exploration is always a core existence in Silent Hill games. No matter where your character might be, in dark places crawling with monsters or a less dangerous environment, checking every door you see, breaking in every house you encounter, searching for supplies etc. It’s just the way SH was meant to be played. SH 2 inherits this feature dearly, by rewarding players generously who’ve spent their time carefully exploring the beautiful world of this small town. Besides finding supplies, there are tons of collectibles, curiosities, place of interests are waiting for James to discover.

3
The other part which related to exploration - this game did a fantastic job is puzzle solving. Puzzle solving in old SH games could be nightmares, because there were quite amount of puzzles, the logic inside to perish the riddles are hard to follow, which results the worst scenarios happens often in old SH games. I spent hours and hours solving a puzzle, but it didn’t work out in the end, then I had no choice but to peek a guide for help. I don’t know whether you felt it embarrassing or not, I didn’t like it had to resolve this way. However, in this game so far, I’ve encountered none of puzzles like the past. I’m able to solve them all by myself. Some riddles took time to figure out but not impossible to understand them. Not being stuck anywhere surely helps the gameplay to be smooth and pleasant.

4
I can barely recall how Maria behaved in original SH 2 because the last time I’ve played that game is 20 years ago. But I enjoyed this new Maria’s company, especially James is a dead serious man who cares about nothing but his precious wife - a man who’s no fun to be with. If I were Laura, I probably would rock him as well. Anyways Maria, in the other hand, is a far nicer companion, even at time she kindly reminded me, my ‘sightseeings’ were not where our main objective lay. Though I couldn’t tell her what we were doing is what keeps us alive. Nothing could change the fact that Maria is the rainbow in this foggy town, a real treasure that is hard to come by.

Now, I’m about to say something that may anger old Silent Hill fans, but bear with me, this is merely my own opinion, you guys take it easy.

5
One of the reasons that I never truly like old silent hill games is it’s clumsy fighting mechanism. In almost all SH games, common monsters will cause heavy damage to players, even in the lowest difficulty. It’s not difficult to see developers used this concept to inflict ‘fear’ to us who are ‘trapped’ in this world. However, since it’s inevitable to fight our way to survive, taking monsters head on is not an option sometimes. Here comes problem. In old SH games, it’s pretty hard to obverse enemies’ attack animations with precision. For example, if you get hit, sometimes it could kill you with ‘ a set of it’s combos’ that leave you zero space to stop it before dying, it’s a situation of either untouchable or die trying. Wanna an example? Miss Nurses. Moreover, Evasion was clumsy as well. Sometimes, it’s not rare to see your character hit by a boss, lying on the ground, then took another 3 hits before standing up, just because the ‘get up’ animation was painfully slow and there was nothing you could do about it. To me, it seems ‘timing things’ right became a random luck to perform in most of combat scenes in old SH games. This makes an ARPG master like myself often looked like a noob in SH walkthroughs. I think I had the thought at least twice that everything I’ve learned from other countless actions games were nothing but an illusion when I fell to this cursed town.

However, this game has changed it. It’s the awesomeness I’d like to praise it most. In this game, enemies have showed players clear about how they are going to attack. You have brief moment to plan your attack, strike at the right moment and dodge the incoming danger when the time presents. It looks more like a modern ARPG now, in terms of combat mechanism. You neither could beat monsters none-stop until they are gone, nor do you get hit unexpectedly with a question mark on your head and take even more none-stop damage after that ‘surprising’ attack. Despite monsties still inflict as much damage as their predecessors, taking damage is still a dark-soul experience(faceplam), it’s a SH tradition, more reasonable and fair this time. So I have nothing to complain.

6
Last, I want to write down something private to Konami.
Because this game is so well made, I don’t believe any fans of Silent Hill should miss it reluctantly. However there is. My love is a huge fan of silent hill universe. From games to movies, she misses none. She even designed her bed room of a special theme of SH 3, and furnished it all by herself. But, unfortunately, she lives in China, where Konami decided to region locked all its games, for god knows why. Konami, you didn’t even bother explaining us why, did you?
What’s worse? Despite I own the game in a different region where it opens for sale. However, even if I buy a gift copy for her, she won’t be able to run and play it after accepting it. It will lie in her library quietly nothing more than a community item, thanks to Steam changed its T&Cs in recent year: now, users won’t be able to activate or run a game which is region locked in their stores.

Konami, you promised to take us back to silent hill, but to her, you never did. She preys her special place, every day and night. Hoping one day it will open a path for her, though her wishes are in vain.

Despite this issue is not something small to ignore personally, I’m fully aware, it’s more a private mater outside of the game, I won’t rate SH 2 down because of it. All in all, the game itself deserves plenty of flowers and applause in every way. There is no doubt it’s a successful remake, whether it surpasses its predecessor or not, I will leave the answers to you.

It marks the beginning of a new era of Silent Hill franchise, the franchise may finally have a bright future tomorrow, after fans have waited for so long. In addition, it’s exactly the reason why none of gamers should miss this title forcefully. Silent Hill always welcomes visitors, did it not, Konami?

Final Fantasy series have never let me down once. It's a franchise made with passion, love, respectations to fans. Square Enix delivered it once more with an extremely high quality product named Final Fantasy XVI.

A year ago, I remember the director of this game said 'they want PC port of FF XVI being a game with no loading screen between areas while players explore them. And it will take time to do it.' So as they say, they really did it after a year or slightly more. The port is delivered as promised. Not only this, it's excellently optimized, no crashings, no stutter moments, meanwhile with stunning visuals, smooth combat, more importantly, all of these can achieve in 4K HDR with a not so advanced rig like mine. So, I don't see why such a good port doesn't deserve my hard earn money? Full price? Not a problem, you guys deserve the hard work.

Despite I haven't finished the game because I'd like to do everything in one go, I take my pace slowly. However, I just have the confidence to say, this game won't let me down, judging by the journey I've been so far, I am pretty sure of it even though the ending hasn't come yet. It's one of the reasons why I write this review before even finishing it, I don't see the reason it would go wrong in the end. Btw, I hardly write a review making conclusions before I finish a game.

For the game content part, I do appreciate that FF XVI's combat is 'devil may cry' style, not the 'players' souls may cry' style, probably because the combat director who newly joined this project is from Capcom, he had worked for that company for 20 years. I don't know about you, but I am pretty sick of most of ARPGs are soul-like nowadays, it was supposed to be a small branch of action games family, not all became it. The trend has gone for an off road track for already too long. FF XVI is like a fresh breeze in this genre. I do enjoy doing a set of combos for higher damage meanwhile don't need to worry about being hit once or twice by bosses that I am about to die. Quite the opposite you know, I never like watching bosses enjoying themselves in battles, while I get the chance to hit them once or twice every 10 seconds or more. I am the protagonist after all, not bosses. Another reason I never really liked soul games. Thank god, I have FF XVI on my side.

One more plus, every time I play a FF game with full English environment, I can learn one thing or two from both speaking and writings. It does help me with the improvements of my level of English in a certain degree which I also appreciated, it couldn't be more beneficial. As a full time gamer, I just don't have much time to spare for improving a language that isn't my mother tongue, but it doesn't mean I gonna give up striving for better. It's a window for world communication after all.

*Updated: I've beaten the game after completed the 7 trials in the main game. Nothing less I've expected it as above, the game maintained it's quality faithfully till the very end. FF XVI is like Joshua and Clive themselves - the ever brighter phoenix shinning so radiant in the players' hearts who've walked their paths along. I'm a Rosarian now, inherited C & J's legacy.

Last but not the least to say: JRPG or ARPG fan, it doesn't matter; for all the good part this game does offer, it's not the gem you should miss out in your library, honestly.

I have 3 physical copies of this game at least at hand. The oldest one is in my safe for almost two decades now.

VN used to have souls, they talk to your heart not to your eyes. They had decent classic music playing for the right scene; they had perfect CVs for the right characters which made the characters feeling so real to you; they had profound content that made you take some time thinking outside of the game. Despite this game looking so outdated by today’s visual standards, it’s good at every way that none of today’s eye candies could dare to compare.

I have literally no interests to play any VNs to finish for as long as the last decade despite I’ve brought many. Because there’s few of them which is good enough comparing to those who were born at the golden era of VNs(1998-2008)including this franchise.

Have you ever heard of うちこし こうたろう? This game is his master piece in his early career, when I started following him. Brilliant stuff may not always well known, well known stuff may not be the best within the industry. Games are no exception.

Scavenger simulator

Most of the time, I pick up crap on Hawaii street because too poor to do anything else.

Looking for trouble to any thugs I encountered, robbing their pockets made me more like a horrible street gang leader than anybody else in the game (too poor to choose a method to earn money legally).

Sitting on a tourist bus, holding a camera stealthily taking pictures of hentais making myself more like a hentai than they do. Hardly can call it an ordinary part time job as it seems.

The game later introduces me a hentaimon game which I gather a bunch of hentais, fighting other hentais, capturing more hentais to join my hentai group, then aim to become the Hentai champion of the island who merely looks like a potato to me.

Despite the game has so many 悪い趣味 activities, I somehow enjoyed them. It’s like trying chocolate for a 1st time, the sweet and bitter combination was weird, but strangely addictive somehow which broke my guard down surprisingly in the end.

Just don’t forget your main objectives since the game has so many interesting sightseeings to enjoy. I got myself sidetracked too far and forgot why was I in Hawaii, which earned myself a title - Kasuga the scavenger of Hawaii (homeless again)

At this rate I can never marry Seonhee myself which got me having no choice but to ask SEGA, when will a Like A Dragon game give us a female protagonist, featuring Seonhee maybe, pretty please? I want that.

P.S Jokes aside, don’t let losers who’ve whined about pricing and exaggerated replayability mislead you, after 77 hours of gameplay, I barely reached 1/3 content of the game. The game is definitely worth every penny of yours and LONG enough EVEN for one walkthrough. If you do ended up buy it with full price which is no problem at all, then let us celebrate our marvelous trip in Hawaii while these losers are crying us an ocean in attempt to float Japan to Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy the scenery, dragons
