Early Access Review
When Minecraft became too monotonously boring for me, I came looking for a new game. This game has it all: crafting, resource hunting, survival, and there's even optional PVP or PVE. It's everything I liked from Minecraft and much more.

This latest update is amazing.

This War of Mine, released by 11-bit Studios in November 2014, is a survival strategy game based on the civilians’ lives during a devastating civil war. The players' goal is to survive to the next day, and ultimately the end of the war, by utilizing the materials found by scavenging to craft the bare necessities for survival. With gameplay somewhat similar to The Sims, players are responsible for their characters’ health and mentality. The game ends with the announcement of a ceasefire around Day 30-40.

During the day, it is too dangerous to go out, you must stay at your shelter and do what needs to be done. The first day is spent scavenging through the rubble left behind by the previous owners to find anything useful. Once you have acquired enough materials, you can go downstairs to your tool bench and craft things you’ll need either now or later on in the game. (TIP: While beds are important, yes, wait on them until you’ve got weapons—from the metal station—and a stove. Those are more important, since you can sleep on the floor.)
When you make crafting stations (metal, herbal, plant) you are given the ability to upgrade them for more options or better efficiency. You should definitely upgrade the original craft bench first, because it gives you better basic crafting options, such as ‘board-up,’ which protect your shelter better from intruders.
At night, your players deem it safe to go outside. You can send one player out into the night to a location to search for anything you may need. If you’re in desperate need of something in particular, certain places have more of certain things. While scavenging, you will find many things you’ll need, such as materials and wood, but you’ll also find many non-necessities. Things that aren’t necessary to survive, like cigarettes or coffee. These can stay in your inventory and be used by your characters to make them happy, or can be traded for something more useful.
During the game, your characters will quite often react to things around them, either negatively or positively, based on the nature of the event. If you save someone’s life, they’ll be content. If you kill someone or steal, they’ll gain a ‘sad’, ‘depressed’, or ‘broken’ moodlet. Once you reach the ‘broken’ status, that character will do nothing but sleep and eat, if given food. They won’t move on command. To fix this, you must have another character ‘talk’ to them in order to bring up their spirits.
There are many different characters in the game, each of which has different abilities. Each character has a backpack that, when out scavenging, can hold a certain amount of items. If you have less than 4 characters, you may get a random special event from a new character asking to join you. The maximum amount of characters you can have is 4.
While this game is an extremely fun strategy game, it is also a reminder to us of the horrors of war – not just for the soldiers, but for the innocent civilians and families.
