Consider this game a short and sweet experience.

Filled with atmosphere, a few decent jump scares and game with a decent amount of lore for such a short game.

It's quite impressive for what it is, it may not break the mould for the walking sim horror game but you could do A LOT worse.

Games fun when it works but crashes constantly therefore it's worth a negative review.
Crashes more in DMZ.

Early Access Review
Once upon a time..

I parachuted into a set of buildings which resembled mouldy potatos, big towering potatos of brown play dough! I could walk through walls, steps looked like melted chocolate bars and doors..well they weren't any doors.

Next thing you know a whoooooole neeeeew woooorld loaded in and I was trapped in some shelving. My squad couldn't see me, the enenmy couldn't see me, even Jesus his holyness Christ couldn't see me.

So I waited, and waited and for a little bit of fun time I waited some more. But alas no one could save me. I had grenades thrown at me, shotgun shells shot at me and no amount of laughing could save me. Sadly I left the game but I got just enough points for a crate, which contained my 67th pair of grey boots.

9/10, would playdough again.

Like many Horror Gamers out there I'm sure you've been following this with various YouTube videos or various Blogs/Posts about the upcoming Horror Games of 2017. I believe this to be the first great Horror Game of 2017 for various reasons, you may question my skipping over RE7 but I played the demo and found it pretty lackluster. An Outlast rip off if anything, so I passed.

So on to NARCOSIS, which if you enjoyed a game called SOMA you very may well find this just as appealing. Not from a story point of view but definitely from an atmospheric point of view. The game sets up your journey from the off. I don’t want to reveal too much about the story as with all Horror Game this is the selling point, well for me it is. From a gameplay perspective the game, like most Horror Game that stick to a narrative is quite linear and very point A to point B. There are however chances to do minor exploring for little side objectives (See Steam Achievements) and you get a much deeper sense of what actually happened deep under the ocean.

The sound is key for any Horror Game and like most of its ilk is a grand selling point. For one thing you are deeper underwater so there is a constant state of dread, akin to being out of space; your eyes do most of the filling in as the world around you is predominately silent. This is probably why that when something scary does happen in the game your senses are constantly heightened. Not to mention that being underwater in a 3 ton suit you aren’t the fastest of runners, so you need to have your wits about you.

My only minor grip with the game was with the Sea Creatures, it’s mostly just personal opinion really. There are certain things that can break immersion for me and shifts its gears in terms of Horror/Atmosphere into more of a Survival/Kill or be Killed scenario. Within the realms of Horror these are two different paths which can add or subtract those feelings of dread. For me it was the latter, I would have preferred the game to stay within the habitats and done a little more exploring and offered up some more tense psychological scares. But I’m just one person, some of you may find this kind of thing enjoyable and tense.

As I said previously I won’t go into the story too much but it’s very clever how it develops over time, it keeps you guessing but you’re also expected to fill in your own gaps at certain points. It does have one of those endings, much like SOMA, where it leaves you with a sense of shock and unease.

All I can say is that with all the cheap shovel wear Horror Game hitting Steam recently, NARCOSIS sticks out as one of the better Horror Games we have seen in 2017 so far. Enjoy it and don’t forget to look for those oxygen tanks.
