So good you'd never guess it was a Ubisoft game

A fun little game, but does take a while to get going. In the beginning it's a little rough and I almost dropped the game, but glad I stuck with it. Essentially you have a lot of islands open to you at the beginning, but with none of the traversal abilities unlocked yet, so you're hitting brick wall after brick wall until you figure out where you need to go. You'll revisit locations wondering if you're actually blocked or you just missed something, so you may be running in circles for a bit. I know this is a staple of metroidvanias, but this was a little exaggerated in the early game

But once you start getting the traversal abilities, the platforming becomes really fun, especially in the late game.

The combat is fun but held back by a few nitpicks. There's sound effects that seem to be missing, and the ones that are there don't have that 'oomph' to feel the power of your attacks. Basic attacks also do almost laughably little damage. I get that they are just a means to be able to access your stronger abilities, but even your strong abilities feel weak. It shouldn't take 20+ hits to dispose of regular minion enemies

Anyway it was fun, the platforming is the star of the show, and with a few changes the combat could be even better

Great game. A little on the easy side, but didn't stop it from being entertaining/addicting throughout the full playthrough

Good game overall, but wait for a sale. There are still bugs in the game that should not have made it past launch, let alone well after release. Missing animations, and music/SFX often bugging out. Sometimes I couldn't even tell if there was silence for dramatic effect, or if the game bugged out. Don't bother paying full price until they bother putting full effort into fixing these issues

Took a while to get going, but it was worth it.

During Episode 1, the gameplay is nothing special. When Episode 2 rolls around and you've unlocked most of the weapons/mechanics and the levels occasionally force you to fight in arenas, that's where the game picks up. That's when it starts to feel like Doom Eternal gameplay. Otherwise, it's too easy to just kite/funnel enemies and kill them without much difficulty.

I will say that the Chainsaw dash is also a little OP, especially when you've unlocked the perks to get armor and health per kill. With no real limit/cooldown to using the Chainsaw dash, it was a little too easy to fly around the map killing dozens of trash mobs and getting health and armor. In many cases, it was more beneficial than using my weapons. I feel it should be another tool in the arsenal, but not a primary means of offense.

The music also became noise after a while. It's always going at max intensity even when there's no action going on. Eventually I had to mute it and play my own music.

What did me in was a bug I encountered in the final series of boss fights where the Cyber Maw boss stopped spawning after reloading a checkpoint -resulting in a progress blocker. I didn't care enough to restart the whole level to fight the previous bosses again just to get my progress back, felt like I saw enough of the game at that point. I might replay the game down the line when the game has less bugs.

Despite my complaints, there is a lot of fun to be had here. When the game is at its highs, its insanely addicting. It is clear the amount of effort that was put into making the game fun. The game also has a lot of charm, humor, and homages to 80s/90s content.

Played many roguelikes through the years, trying to find one just as fun as Gungeon. Some have come close, but this one still comes out on top for me after all this time.
