While my initial intention was to write a review much earlier, I'm glad I waited. In 2021, I'd heard about Pathologic but didn't have the same appreciation as I do today. If you're seeking a brief answer to the question, "Would you recommend this game to other players?" my response is yes.

Now, for my disorganized ramble

Pathologic isnota game for everyone. It matches most of the words attributed to it: grim, unsettling, and at times, downright frustrating. There were instances when I had to step away due to a mixture of frustration and a sense of hopelessness. [One particularly memorable moment occurred on day 5 when, after multiple failed attempts to bring a crying infant to the town hall, I faced the choice of either succumbing to thugs or infection. I realized I just was not prepared to help this child at all. It was completely defeating. I had to endure the haunting cries of the child as I sprinted away. Even after obtaining the baby, thieves were still on my heels. I just could not believe the callousness of some of the towns folk. This experience left an emotional mark on me, a level of impact I had never encountered in any other form of media.]

It may sound ridiculous, but this game has genuinely altered my perspective on the world. The characters within it stand out as some of the best aspects, each with a unique depth. Also... They are realistically annoying and you will let out an immense sigh when speaking with them. Pathologic NPC's are so damn bull-headed... get it? bull? whatever..

Moreover, the community surrounding Pathologic is a group of passionate, creative, and thoughtful minds. While you shouldn't let a community solely influence your decision on a game(but hey you're reading this now, no?), the camaraderie I found among talented artists, writers, and video-makers enhanced my appreciation for the game.

Pathologic's difficulty level, contrary to some opinions, is not impossible. The game can be forgiving in some ways and in others instances you will cry tears of joy from finding marbles in the garbage. Guides can be useful, but I recommend avoiding excessive spoilers. Adjusting the difficulty is also acceptable, but the game is best experienced by going in blind. I never watched any video essays before playing, and I'm so thankful for that. Some say that the prose in this game is too pretentious or hard to understand, but I never had that issue. If any plot points confuse you, looking them up or discussing with the community can provide clarity. Admittedly, this isn't a game I can play after a long day of work or classes.

Its replayability is a strong suit, offering so much that may have been missed in your first run. I've introduced Pathologic to friends, and each has found enjoyment for diverse reasons. Give it a go if you can—it's an experience worth having.
