I have nearly 1500 hours in this game, I love it and will continue to play it even though I completely disagree with the paid DLC that was released. I am majorly disappointed that they used time, money, and manpower on an expansion of the game without actually finishing the game, and then hid it behind a paywall. They said all the content besides the map is free, you can just spawn it in, but Single player is just boring, and playing on a server you don't own you're probably not going to get the content. All this time that they've been splitting their efforts working on both, they could have fixed and polished their main game more.

As for the base game and hopefully a helpful review, This game is great to play ( with other people).
"Early Access" just means it's not finished and there will be bugs/glitches/problems in your every day play. Single player is fun at first, exploring the map, dino's/creatures, building w/e you want. It gets old, at least for me, fairly quick though because the game really becomes fun when you play with other players. Playing with other players doesn't mean you have to PvP, some servers are dedicated purely to PvE, and some a mix of both (PvPvE - more casual pvp).

As for the bugs/glitches/ problems, some have been around since the release and still have not been fixed. They can be very frustrating especially when you lose items/pets that were hard to come by. Going exploring in the water is usually a bad idea, unless you have plenty of extra pieces of gear to throw away. Every time I have died under water, I have never been able to find my gear. Yes I went exactly to where I have died and still was never able to find a body or a bag. The most frustrating and seemingly easily fixed bug is the one where loot crates sink down further than they're intended to, into the map or rocks making them inaccessable.

Overall this game was a huge source of entertainment for me, and hopefully will continue to be. The recent decision of the devs in releasing the paid dlc has made me distrust them a whole lot. They have been working on this expansion, as far as I know, in secret, splitting their efforts betweeen the core game and the expansion. I can understand possibly needing money and wanting to find a way to get some quickly, but if they had devoted their efforts entirely on the core game, they might have been able to make major progress and possibly be closer to finishing the game on time.

I do not like the decision they have made, and in protest of it ( all I can really do besides stop playing) I'm giving this a do not buy/play for now.
