Star Ocean 6 is a return to glory for tri-Ace after years of terrible and mediocre games. Easily the best title in the series since Star Ocean: Till the End of Time on the PS2, and arguably since Star Ocean: The Second Story on PS1. It's also undoubtedly their best game since 2005's Radiata Stories.

Star Ocean 6 follows the story of Raymond, a cargo-pilot from a system not associated with the Pangalactic Federation, and Latrecia, a princess of the underdeveloped planet Aster IV. When Raymond's ship is shot down by a federation battleship, he ends of stranded on Aster IV, where he meets Latrecia and becomes embroiled in a brewing conflict between the planet's two great nations. Meanwhile, a force from another world is manipulating events behind the scenes.

Though the story takes longer than it ought to really get going, by the end it becomes a gripping sci-fi fantasy tale that explores some new ideas in the realm of networked species (ie. the Borg). The combat is a blast - fast paced but not overly complicated, and fairly customizable. Traveling around the world is fun as well thanks to the flight ability. Item creation returns as well and is highly abusable, allowing you to break the game in crazy ways if you put in the time.

If you're a fan of the older games in the series, or the series in general, it's definitely one to pick up. It'll also scratch the sci-fi RPG itch, as those are a lot harder to come by out of Japan these days.

Relentlessly soul-crushing story that will leave you in tatters before the end. Haunting, poetic, and beautiful, it stays with you long after it's over. Highly recommended
